Achala Sachdev is an Indian actress who mostly works in classic Bollywood movies. She is best known for playing Laxmi Kedarnath, the wife of Balraj Sahni’s character (Lala Kedarnath) in the Bollywood film “Waqt” (1965). She is also popular for playing Simran’s grandmother in “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (1995).

Achala Sachdev was born on Monday, May 3, 1920 (91 years old at the time of death) in Peshawar, North West Frontier Province of British India (now Pakistan). Her zodiac sign is Taurus. In her teens, she started working as a child star.

Little is known about her parents. On a film set in Mumbai, Achala was introduced to Clifford Douglas Peters (a mechanical engineer who had a factory in Bhosari called Morris Electronics that made small electronic parts such as diodes) through Yash Chopra. Peters’ first wife had died at the time, and Achara himself was a divorcee. The couple eventually got married. After marrying Peters, Sahdev moved to Pune with her husband. They lived in a bungalow in Bhosari for a while before moving to Hadapsar. Her husband died in 2002. Achala has a son named Jyotin with her first husband who lives in the United States. In 2006, she had visited him in the United States for her granddaughter’s marriage. She also has a daughter who lives in Mumbai but has no contact with her.

In 1938, Achara started her career as an actress with the Hindi film “Fashionable Wife”. She next appeared in Bollywood films such as “Rahi” (1952), “Sabse Bada Rupaiya” (1955), “Sampoorna Ramayana” (1961), “Dil Ek Mandir” (1963) and “Sangam” ( 1964). In 1965, she gained huge popularity for playing Lara’s wife in the Bollywood film Waqt, in which the hit song “Aye Meri Zohra Jabeen” was depicted on her.
Her most famous works include “Mera Naam Joker” (1970), “Daag: A Poem of Love” (1973), “Chandni” (1989) and “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (1995).

She also worked in the films Nine Hours to Rama (1963) and Housewives (1963).
During her roughly 74-year career, Achara has made more than 250 films. The last film she worked on was Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). Akhara has a cameo role in the film.

After the death of her husband, Clifford Douglas Peters, Achara lived alone in Pune. On September 8, 2011, she suffered a broken leg when she slipped in the kitchen. Following the incident, Achara was taken to Pune Hospital and Research Center by her attendants, but was quickly discharged. On October 21, 2011, she was readmitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of multiple emboli in the brain, resulting in quadriplegia – complete paralysis of the limbs and trunk. The condition further resulted in her complete paralysis and vision loss. On April 30, 2012, Akala took her last breath.

- Akhara loves to meditate. After her husband passed away in 2002, Akala spent most of her time meditating and listening to meditation music and lectures.
- Five years before her death, Achara gifted her apartment in Pune to the Janseva Foundation, a charitable organization. In return, the organization’s founder and chairman, Dr. Vinod Shah, took care of her as long as she was alive.
- When she was admitted and treated at a hospital in Pune before her death, Bollywood celebrities reportedly did not visit her.
