In 1983, while Abhijit was at JNU, he joined other JNU students in a protest outside the residence of Vice-Chancellor PN Srivastava. The police were called and when the students resisted the police, the students were beaten and detained. Abhijit and 400 other students were sent to Tihar prison. However, they were released on bail 10 days later and the charges against them were dropped after a year-long legal and political battle.
