The journey of life
Mary Abigail Warmbach was born on June 2, 1980, in Rochester, New York, by Pitt and Judy Warmbach. Mary is the youngest of seven children. When Wambach was four years old, she fell in love with football. Her sister was the first to take part in the sport. Inspired by her, she also started playing the sport.
She attended Our Lady of Mercy High School from 1994 to 1998. During this period, her game performance improved significantly. She scored 142 goals in high school. During this time, Wambach practiced diving headers extensively, which she later adopted as her signature style as an international player. Her stellar record helped her become a top high school player.
The Rochester Spirit Club team named her captain. In addition, she is a member of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) U-16 national team and national U-20 player pool. As a player on the U.S. women’s national soccer team, she even trained with them. Additionally, she was a member of the first U.S. youth soccer team to compete in Beijing, China.
Wanbach, known as a top university recruit, is naturally sought after by top universities. Ultimately, she accepted a full athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville from 1998 to 2001.
As a freshman, Wambach led the Florida Gators to their first NCAA National Championship against the 15-time champion North Carolina Tar Heels. The Florida Gators won numerous championships and titles during her time with the Gators. She also helped set school career records for goals, assists, points, game-winning goals and hat-tricks. For ten years, she was the top scorer with 96 goals.
In October 2013, Abby Wanbach married longtime girlfriend Sarah Huffman in Hawaii. Three years later, the couple announced their divorce. She said in November 2016 that she was in a relationship with author Glennon Doyle Melton. The couple married in May 2017.
In addition to raising money for the Epilepsy Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Wambach is an active philanthropist. She joined her teammates at the Bank of America charity event for the Chicago Marathon. She also serves as an ambassador for Athlete Allies.

- Abby Wambach’s extraordinary talent and skill earned her a place in the 2001 national team training camp. Her first match was against Germany at the Nike America’s Cup in Chicago. Finally won 4-1. Against Finland in San Jose, Wambach scored her first international goal and helped her team win 3-0.
- In 2002, she was selected by Washington Liberty for her second season in the Women’s United Soccer Association. After scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists, she was named WUSA Rookie of the Year.
- In the 2003 season, Wambach helped the Washington Liberty win the Founders Cup III. Not only did she score the second-fastest goal in Founders Cup history in the final against Atlanta, but she also scored the winning goal.
