Yes, Let Bryce Dallas Howard Direct the Star Wars Movie
Let’s give Bryce Dallas Howard all the credit he deserves. As the daughter of acclaimed director Ron Howard, she took the time to earn herself a reputation as an actor and even a director. She started directing a short film called “Orchid” back in 2006, and now she is directing a film for “Star Wars.” By “things” I mean The Mandalorian and the latest episode of The Book of Boba Fett. I’m sure I’m representing a lot of fans when I say her episodes are very compelling. As far as The Book of Boba Fett goes, at least so far, she’s directed perhaps the best episode of the series. I hope she comes back to direct another episode, that’s quite possible. However, I would love to see Bryce Dallas Howard take on the task of directing a Star Wars movie. OK, so on paper, this sounds a bit far-fetched. So she directed three jaw-dropping episodes for two Disney+ series, but that’s not the same as directing an entire movie. It’s obvious, but I think we should take a closer look at her work. What makes Bryce Dallas Howard’s direction so intriguing is that she has a clear understanding of the characters and the Star Wars universe. She was even drawn to the idea of The Mandalorian because it gave her the opportunity to work with the larger world, which she thought could be beneficial for casual and loyal audiences. It’s a good way to look at it because she clearly understands that Star Wars shouldn’t be included in the same story we’re used to seeing.
We got our first taste of this in the directorial debut of season one of The Mandalorian. Called “Sanctuary” in the fourth episode, she has the titular heroic sidekick with Gina Carano’s Cala Dunes. Yes, yes, I know how many people don’t like Gina Carano these days, but we can’t take away what she brings to the Cara Dune character. Let’s give more credit to Bryce Dallas Howard for giving us the episode that debuts a powerful female character like Kara Dune. She’s not a Jedi, but she doesn’t have to be. Give her a heavy laser rifle and she’ll kill a few imps. Take the blaster and she’ll smash them in the face. It all seems real considering Gina Carano’s background as a mixed martial artist, but as a less experienced actress, Bryce Dallas Howard was able to work with her and help her bring out what she could do The best show ever. It’s one of the biggest challenges a director has to do, and the fact that she’s able to help Gina Carano do it deserves a shoutout.
But what many fans love about this episode of Sanctuary is how it feels. For those of you who have seen The Seven Samurai, you can tell where the inspiration came from. Aside from some intense action scenes and some touching moments between Mando and Little Yoda, I’d say Bryce Dallas Howard earned the right to direct another episode. She’ll finally do that in season two, which is Bo-Katan’s live-action debut, not to mention her continued quest to retake The Mandalore. The real highlight of The Boba Fett Book is the latest episode where Boba Fett doesn’t show up. Bryce Dallas Howard brought back Mando from season one, along with Armorer and Paz Vizsla. The nostalgia is palpable, and it’s only been two years since we last saw Mando. Once again, let’s give Bryce Dallas Howard due credit for not only proving that she knows how to give these characters a direction. If she can do that, then I’m sure she can do the same for more characters in the universe. The question is, can she do that in the movie? In my opinion, the answer is yes.
Star Wars fans on social media are basically calling on Bryce Dallas Howard to direct a future Star Wars movie. The more I write, the more I want it to happen. I think Bryce Dallas Howard starting with The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett is her way of starting small and moving towards the big fish. I’d go a step further and say she could direct something that would hit the Star Wars sequel trilogy missed. For example, the protagonist of that trilogy was Rey, who was quite a divisive character in the eyes of many Star Wars fans. Why did she break up? Well, while many fans see her as a strong heroine, many others see her as a Mary Sue who can do anything. I’ll admit, I’m more inclined towards this sentiment. Rey definitely had her moments in the trilogy, but in The Rise of Skywalker she showed more Mary Sue traits than anywhere else. Honestly, it makes me nervous. It was a rather disappointing way to end her storyline, but then again, she could do another one in a future show. That’s how almost all of the prequel characters are properly characterized, and they actually become good characters. I hope Rey can do the same, but time will tell. I think fans would prefer to see new characters introduced into the Star Wars universe, and that’s where Bryce Dallas Howard can show her ideas.
The area where she can really do well is giving us another strong female character on the level of Kara Dune. This is something we welcome, as Cala Dunes may never return. If that’s the case, then Bryce Dallas Howard could give us another heroine we can really get behind. It could be a soldier-type character like Cara Dune, or even a Jedi. Heck, why not give us a female villain? The Inquisitor would be a great addition to the Star Wars Rogue Gallery. If Bryce Dallas Howard can give us something like this, and think outside the box a little bit, then I’m sure she’ll give us a good Star Wars movie. Star Wars fans, what do you think? Do you think Bryce Dallas Howard is suitable for directing a Star Wars movie? I stand by my point, I think she should take her chance if it involves her. Since her father was involved in the 2018 Han Solo movie, and she apparently spent some time on set with him, I think she could learn more pointers from an experienced director.
