Would the Raid remake really work without Gareth Evans’ guidance?
If you like crazy martial arts movies, then you need to check out The Raid: Redemption and its 2014 sequel. If you haven’t seen foreign movies before, I think these two action gems will make you a fan. Just look at the first and you’ll be looking for the second, but I must say, you need a strong stomach. There is a lot of blood and a lot of bullets around. So if you’re only into Oscar-winning blockbusters known for their stellar acting and development, The Raid probably isn’t for you. Fortunately, the movie has a lot of fans, and that’s because sometimes all you need is blind, over-the-top action. Isn’t that why we all watch action movies? So what is the raid about? Director Gareth Evans selected Indonesian action superstars Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim as two men in Indonesia’s elite police task force in 2011. members, who are sent to raid a crime-ridden apartment with the aim of arresting a violent crime lord, have caught the attention of American audiences. Therefore, the direct title, could not be more appropriate. Oh, and it starts with a bang as the raid opens. The best part is, it never slows down. Just when you have time to take it all in, things get dirty and dirty right away.
What’s not to love about these action scenes? In fact, remember the two very small but very cunning Indonesian assassins who fought John Wick towards the end of the third movie? Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman gave him a great chance for his money. Well, the former played the brutal right hand of the crime lord in the first raid movie, while the latter played the top assassin who had an epic kitchen fight scene with Rama (Iko Uwais) in the second. And I’m pretty sure he used the same knife when he fought John Wick. These are some seemingly tough little guys, but given their expertise in the homegrown martial art Pencak Silat, it’s not hard to see why. The first Raid film set the bar high for the sequel, and Gareth Evans returned with The Raid 2 in 2014. If you want to see a sequel that can do even bigger, The Raid 2 does just that, it’s full of gore and violent martial arts fights you need to watch. It’s funny, and the last scene left on a very curious suspense. What happened to Rama? We don’t know, but we want to know, that’s why we can use the third Raid movie.
Almost all fans have been begging for Raid 3 for the past six years. After all this time, it looks like we’ll be making another raid movie. The problem is, it’s not a three-item. In fact, it’s not even an Indonesian movie. What we’re going to get is a US remake for Netflix only. Gareth Evans will return, but only as a producer. Guess who will make it with him? Only one of the biggest names in action movies, the infamous Michael Bay. In the eyes of many fans, that could mean bad news. I must admit, I do love Michael Bay and some of his movies, but it’s hard not to think about his absolute worst. Can we point to the second and last two Transformers movies? For the record, I do really like Dark of the Moon. On the plus side, Michael Bay won’t be directing the upcoming American remake. That should get people more excited, but you can bet he’s going to provide a lot of creative action insight for this remake. Why doesn’t he? He knows how to direct some killer action scenes, but please don’t let him have any creative say in the story. Although I have to admit, the ambulance looks like a lot of fun.
There are already two producers involved in this remake of The Raid, who is the director? It looks like Patrick Hughes will be the director. His credentials include The Expendables 3, Killer’s Bodyguard, and Killer’s Wife’s Bodyguard. I haven’t seen Killer Wife’s Bodyguard, but I do like the first one. As for The Expendables 3, I think everyone agrees it’s the worst of the trilogy. Not exactly the broadest resume, but it does suggest he has experience directing action films. Again, that’s what the Raid movie is all about. According to reports, Patrick Hughes’ vision for The Raid remake is very similar, just more Americanized. Instead of a Jarkata cop, the remake will star an undercover DEA operative instead. His mission is to find drug lords by working with cartel informants, which I think will involve some fighting. Somehow I got a lot of Steven Seagal vibes when I read this news. What we sold us in the first Raid movie was its emphasis on foreign martial arts that our American audiences weren’t used to seeing. The fact that Gareth Evans has a real Pencak Silat practitioner to lead the film feels real.
When I heard the synopsis of this remake, I just didn’t get the same vibe. The raid worked because everyone had some knowledge of Indonesian martial arts and few criminals had guns. The idea works in that particular context, but it may not be so great for Americans. Reports also suggest that the Raid remake will take place somewhere in Philadelphia. Do all the cops and petty criminals in Philadelphia know some kind of martial art? Maybe the protagonist is one of those cops who actually take martial arts classes, maybe all the cartel members practice mixed martial arts for fun. If that’s the case, then maybe this remake will work, but it still doesn’t feel the same. I do wish Gareth Evans had a lot of creative say in the remake of The Raid because he knows what makes these films successful. Or maybe his name was just attached to it because he was the director of the first two movies? This did happen, and I hope it doesn’t happen with the remake. I just don’t see Patrick Hughes reaching what Gareth Evans did. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong, but it’s hard to get past that kind of action. Fans of The Raid, what do you think? Maybe Gareth Evans will skip this to direct that Deathstroke movie? One can hope.
