Caroline went to her truck to retrieve her gun, which was allegedly when Emmett and his friend whistled at her as they drove away.
That night, Caroline’s husband Roy Jenkins and his half-brother JW Millam broke into Moses Wright’s home, pulled Emmett out of bed and dragged him into the darkness. Moses did everything in his power to protect Emmet, even begging them to give him a whip and let him go because he was still a boy. The next morning, when Emmett didn’t come back, Uncle Moses had to make a call that his mother should never have gotten. When he reveals to Mamie that Emmett went missing after being taken away by two white men during the night, Mamie fears her worst nightmare has come true. Mamie knew that racism could kill a young black boy in Mississippi, which is why she objected to Emmett spending her summers in the South in the first place. She moved to Chicago when he was a baby because she didn’t want to raise her son in that environment. Though heartbroken, Mamie did her best to be strong and stay positive.
In the second episode, the show switches back and forth between Mississippi and Chicago. Fortunately, Mamie had her mother by her side, and her friends used their connections to get help from the black media and other civil rights pioneers to pressure Mississippi to find Emmett. Mamie’s hopes are dashed when she receives word that they have pulled Emmett’s mutilated body from the Tallahassee River. The moment Mamie found out her son was dead was heartbreaking. To make matters worse, Mississippi’s money sheriff tries to cover up Emmett’s brutal murder for the next few episodes.
