Why the US remake of ‘Crash Landing On You’ Won’t Work
The current Hallyu wave has allowed South Korea to showcase their talents in the most unique way. Take the South Korean boy band BTS as an example Asia’s first group wins American Music Awards Artist of the Year, or acclaimed Korean actress Yuh-Jung Young (Meicheng), who became first korean actor Bringing home the Oscars, and finally, the Korean film Parasite became first non-English film Take home the Oscar for Best Picture. At this rate, they make the record-breaking achievement look like a walk in the park. Besides music and movies, Koreans have mastered the art of bringing various dramas or “K-Dramas” to life. The most successful is The Squid Game, a survival drama that has become one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. Another K-Drama that gets fair recognition is Crash Landing on You.This Popular series It premiered in December 2019 and has dominated the global market ever since. This is probably why American Remake It is reported to be in production. The unique storyline revolves around a forbidden romance between a North Korean soldier and a South Korean businesswoman who accidentally finds herself on North Korean soil after a paraglider accident. The production of the series may have encountered some Backlash from North Korea Because of its controversial storyline, but the enthusiasm of its audience certainly makes up for it.
Now that an American remake is said to be in the final stages of discussions, the question is how the show’s producers plan to recreate a Romeo and Juliet-esque romance between the two protagonists if the storyline will be set in the United States. What makes K-Drama so influential is the history behind the Korean War, which split North and South Korea. It will be difficult to reproduce because nowhere in the United States has experienced such a tragedy. Creating a fictional world was also challenging because K-Drama has set such a high benchmark. Another hard-to-beat element is the chemistry of the two leads. The original series is led by Korean superstar Hyun Bin (negotiation), as Captain Lee Jung Hyuk and Son Ye Jin (the last princess), playing the role of Yoon Se-ri. The two got along so well that they even became real-life lovers after the show ended. They play their characters with such conviction that Hyun Bin even needs to learn how to speak in a North Korean accent to make his character seem more believable. The supporting characters also very effectively portray the different lifestyles of the residents living in North and South Korea. All the elements fit together nicely and really make the whole collection complete. Watching the finale feels like saying goodbye to a bunch of people you’ve already connected. Each episode contains scenes that can trigger a wide range of emotions. Going crazy watching these 16 episodes felt like riding a crazy emotional roller coaster, coming out alive and wanting to do it all over again. These are just some of the many reasons why the remake is sure to have a sizable shoe to fill.
This isn’t the first time South Korea and the US have exchanged remakes. There have been countless movies and TV series remakes over the years. Some of these include the Korean remake of the hit US political drama “Designated Survivor” and the US remake of the Korean medical drama “The Good Doctor.” The Crash Landing on You remake won’t be shot entirely in the dark, but with such high expectations. If a show is already so well made, there’s very little reason it shouldn’t need a remake. In the end, comparing the two versions will be inevitable. It’s only natural for fans of the series to be indifferent or even disapproving of the aforementioned remake. As the saying goes, there is only one original. Rather than a remake, let the show’s creators draw inspiration from K-Drama. It’s an epic story after all, and it shows how love knows no borders and how a person can come into your life to save you in more ways than you can imagine.
