Why the Cynthia Nixon scene and that… too bad

As a disclaimer, I don’t like Sex and the City. I don’t hate this show or anything, but I never watched an episode until I wrote this down. Of course, I checked out a few just to get an idea of the characters and the world, namely Miranda Hobbs, but this post isn’t a bashing of the show or a review of the reboot. I know the context of the Miranda Hobbs scene, so my focus is on that particular moment rather than the rest of the story in that episode. You’ve probably heard of the infamously creepy scene where Hobbs goes weirdly nonsense on the set of her black professor, Nya Wallace. This is a bad scenario and there is no other way to fix it. I checked to see if Miranda was any racist, and this moment made her character even stranger.i understand that Sex and the City There wasn’t particularly strong support for black characters in the initial run, but it’s 2021. Do you mean to tell me that Miranda Hobbs has never seen a black woman in a position of power in her 50+ years? Honestly, if this scene were played during the series’ original run, it would still be cringe-worthy. We are not yet free from slavery. It’s almost impossible for me to believe this woman hasn’t met at least one black professor. That’s why being woken up goes wrong. I know Miranda is a feminist. I’m not going to shout about this feature as it was already established in the previous version of the series. However, the scene feels very casual, and overall, the episode feels like the writers are trying to correct a problem that wasn’t a factor in the first place.
We get it, modern Hollywood feels bad about the long-standing exclusion of black, minority and LGBTQIA communities, and I’m generally happy that more diverse roles are opening up, but it’s not a solution to the mistakes of the past. Hollywood seems to be actively trying to make up for the mistakes of their past, but unfortunately it’s been creepy and bad. There is no reason for this scenario to happen in 2021. This is a woman around 5 years old who is shocked by the idea that a black professor is leading a class? Hollywood doesn’t have to keep trying to acknowledge the existence of black people. Can we only have great people who happen to be black, minorities, or even gay or lesbian? Omar Little was not a popular or memorable character because of his skin color. He’s a badass with a strict moral code and happens to be gay. So does Denzel Washington’s Alonzo Harris. This guy is a corrupt bastard who abuses his position. It has nothing to do with him being black.Even Abilene came from help Is a good character irrespective of her race. She is a kind and strong woman dealing with a racist society. Yes, her skin tone is what held her back during this time, but it doesn’t define who she is as a person.
Plus, that scene goes against Miranda’s overall character.again, i’m not someone Sex and the City Experts, so I don’t know everything about Miranda Hobbs, but she’s the general foundation of a fiery, ambitious, cynical, yet loving and caring person. I know that people grow and develop over time. Few people in their 20s are exactly the same as those in their 40s or 50s. However, she wasn’t ignorant of black people, or especially black women with braids. Nor is there any trace of her growing up in a world that doesn’t exist.Randomly inserted this scene just to show like that… Damaged her identity as a character. She never had a cynical worldview about race (at least according to my research). Hollywood, you have to stop putting your awakening in front of us. As I mentioned earlier, there’s nothing wrong with the show adding variety to the show. Our world is a colorful place, filled with all walks of life, and it’s great that movies and TV want to reflect our evolving society. But you don’t have to keep telling us black people exist. or minorities. Or anyone from the LGBTQIA community. Focus on layered and nuanced roles that happen to be members of the Black, minority or LGBTQIA community.
