Why Mr. Heckles is the most underrated character on Friends
pass through friends Focusing primarily on the lives of the six protagonists, several stole the show. One of them is Gunther (James Michael Taylor), the seventh friend in many ways. The other is Monica’s downstairs neighbor, Mr. Huckles (Larry Hankin), who lives a lonely life. On the show about friends, he’s a friendless guy who in many ways represents what it feels like to be on the other side. Mr Heckles could also be an eighth friend, but his time on the show was brief. Given the chance, Hankin’s character could become a fan favorite with a more interesting storyline. The reasons are as follows:
1. Mr. Heckles has some catchy one-liners
Although his time friends Being short-lived, Mr. Huckles left his fans with some common one-liners. Every time he knocked on the girls’ apartment and complained about how loud they were, he would start complaining with “You’re doing it again…”. Another common phrase for Heckles is, “You owe me…” He likes to pin it on girls as they pass by his apartment. Coincidentally, the girls always pass by Mr Hux when looking for animals or returning them to their owners, and “owe” him a cat and a waffle. His last and most common line was, “I might…” He used it every time he lied. Speaking of lies…
2. He often makes things up
Mr. Hackles is not the most real character. Not only did he lie, but he covered his lie with a catchy phrase. But who can blame him? Maybe the poor man was trying to be likable. When the girls stumble across a stray cat and look around for its owner, Mr Hercules falsely claims it was his cat, even though the pet apparently doesn’t know him. Sometimes he’ll lie about playing an instrument, being Chandler’s (Matthew Perry) new roommate, keeping birds, saying “I can keep birds…”, or attending a dinner party that doesn’t exist. Mr. Hercules often tries to give the impression that he has things going, even when he doesn’t. Other times, Mr. Hercules’ lies went too far. His biggest was when Rachel, known for losing things, lost Rose’s favorite pet, Marcel.
3. Sometimes he goes too far
Ross (David Schwimmer)’s monkey Marcel will stay with Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). The two were at ease at first, with Rachel watching the TV and explaining what happened to Marcel. Soon, Rachel learned that Marcel had done second on Monica’s shoes. As she cleaned up the mess, Rachel left the door open and Marcel walked away. When the other friends return, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) immediately notices that the air is negative. A search party was organized and Monica and Phoebe were taken to Mr. Hercules’ residence. Hercules denies seeing Ross’s monkeys, but then exposes himself by ordering some bananas. All the friends show up at his apartment only to find that he has dressed up Marcel and named him Patty the Monkey. Thanks to Rachel acknowledging her past, Ross got his monkey back.
4. He wore his signature robe
Aside from telling a white lie every now and then and going a little too far, Mr. Hercules also wears a signature robe that, if we guess, hasn’t been seen inside the washing machine for a long, long time. Surprisingly , he always wears a white T-shirt that looks clean most of the time and a set of grey pants. Whether it’s girls passing by his apartment at night or he’s fooling Chandler’s new roommate, Mr. Hackles always wears the same outfit. His signature looks represent his life in every way. A reclusive man who prefers the comfort of his home, disconnected from everything that happens outside his apartment building. Aside from his conspicuous gray hair, this makes him an unforgettable character.
5. When he died, the girls appeared as he wished
After repeatedly warning the girls about the noise in their flat, Mr Hercules had finally had enough. The whole gang is in Monica’s apartment when Hercules decides to remind them with a broom. With every thud he thumped on the ceiling, the friends fought back until they won. Except they didn’t really win. As friends watched, Mr Hercules died and was pushed from the flat. When asked what happened to the building’s attendant, Mr. Trigg (Michael Hagerty), he revealed that Huckles was found with a broom in his hand. He thought the man died from sweeping the floor. “It could be me…” he said. Only friends know what really happened. Later, it turned out that Mr. Hercules was not as grim as he seemed. In his will, all of his property would go to “the rowdy girl in my upstairs apartment”.
6. He was right about the noise from Monica’s apartment
Noise in Monica’s apartment was the cause of Mr. Hercules’ death. Too many times, he went up to warn the girls and they wouldn’t listen. “You did it again…”, he would say. Once, Phoebe happened to be the one who opened the door, and she was most like Phoebe’s nature, she gave Mr. Hercules a piece of her mind. Friends didn’t know they had been noisy until he died. Friends cleaned out his apartment to fulfill his last wish. Mr Heckles turned out to be a hoarder and, as Monica put it, a lot of “bullshit”. They found out a few things about him, including the fact that he was voted the class clown in high school. Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe happen to hear a loud bang from Monica’s apartment, proving that Mr. Hercules was right all along.
