Why HBO Max’s Everyday Movie Strategy Failed

In December, WarnerMedia made a game-changing announcement that sent shockwaves throughout Tinseltown: The studio plans to release their entire theatrical lineup for 2021 on HBO Max. This has caused concern across the industry. Many believe this will be the beginning of the end of the theater chain, as moviegoers get used to showing movies at home. Looking back, this turned out to be a huge mistake for the company in the long run. The company reportedly lost more than $1 billion as it worked on the streaming service before it launched last year. Now this post isn’t going to discuss the financials and statistics of HBO Max’s losses, because it’s clear that WarnerMedia has taken a huge financial hit as none of the movies released on HBO Max have been a big hit on the service, and box office. Over the past year, audiences have proven that nothing beats a theatrical experience. Sure, the update is available in most theaters in the country, and it could be cheaper, but overall, the daily release strategy has failed for a number of reasons.
The biggest problem is that WarnerMedia has largely turned away filmmakers and movie lovers who see value in the theatrical experience. In this day and age, there are a wide variety of TVs with loud surround speakers that provide theater quality in the home. However, the environment simply can’t compare to experiencing a feature film in theaters. Witness something resembling a concert in a place where the crowd gathers: the atmosphere, the majesty, the roar of the crowd, their emotional responses can enhance your cinematic experience. You simply can’t get it in the living room. This is why movies like Godzilla vs Kong, Duneor Mortal Kombat Performed relatively well in theaters. These films are visual spectacles that need to be shown in theaters.
However, it’s not just that the movie-watching experience is vastly different, and HBO Max doesn’t really offer much. Granted, they have a huge selection of movies, but viewers don’t particularly get a movie-only streaming service. It’s about the whole original content.you can see Godzilla vs Kong, Dune, or Matrix resurrection With Blu-ray, iTunes, Amazon, or whenever a digital copy of a movie is purchased, HBO Max doesn’t particularly need to see the original content outside of their movie range. What makes Netflix such a force is that their slew of original content has sparked a lot of discussion. House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, The list continues from there. Netflix continues to dominate as they make sure to update their catalog every week with plenty of original material.Granted, a lot of this material turns out to be junk tall girl or kissing booth, But even those movies have a section of fans. WarnerMedia made the mistake of not really taking advantage of their DC universe and experimenting with their wealth of heroes and villains. Disney plus has invested wisely in their Marvel and Star Wars assets, and the service has successfully introduced some of the most original and innovative content that has helped grow the TV landscape.
I know HBO Max has original stuff like Titan, Harley Quinn, and Doom Patrol, But none of these shows made a big splash because they weren’t particularly prominent Wanda Vision or Rocky did. Plus, there’s no connection whatsoever with their film counterparts. This is also a big advantage for Marvel and Star Wars. Everything is interconnected, so for many fans, these shows are a must-watch because they’re an important part of a larger puzzle.you will never see anyone titan or Doom Patrol pop up Batman or Neptune and the lost kingdom. Similar movies Zach Hind’s Justice League or Suicide Squad There may have been interest in new subscribers, but once their highly anticipated photos disappeared from the streaming service, people were choosing to ditch HBO Max entirely because there was nothing to keep them there. The pricey $14.99 subscription doesn’t help either. Plus, the streaming market is a crowded place right now. The key to HBO Max is to continue to build its brand with original content. They don’t have to build an entire universe like Marvel or Star Wars, but they need to give audiences a reason to stay. Posting movies every day is not the answer. It might make them temporary subscribers, but it’s never going to be a long-term solution.
