Why dance sequences in Suicide Squad are the best scenes
Sadly, James Gunn’s Suicide Squad It turned out to be a bad box office movie. Despite the overwhelmingly positive response to the comic book feature, Suicide Squad may be put on hold unless peacemaker It was such a success that WB couldn’t deny fans of the first movie a sequel. Regardless of, Suicide Squad Probably not the most original story in the world, but this movie is a fun little gem with lively acting and great action. Who can forget the crazy but cool opening action sequence of the boomerang being destroyed by a helicopter? Or did Peacemaker and Bloodsport try to unite each other by creatively killing civilians, but then screwing up? Or dozens of rats crowding the streets to help our fellow anti-heroes defeat Starro? There are plenty of great moments in the 2021 feature; however, the most notable is the dance sequence at the Corto Maltese bar. No, it’s not because the Easter egg showcases the MCU’s mantid Pom Klementieff. Really the interaction of Peacemaker, Bloodsport, Rick Flagg, Ratcatcher 2 and Polka-Dot Man before their meeting with Thinker. On the face of it, this scene doesn’t seem worth it. Just the gang drinking and having fun, really no stakes and not part of the plot. However, this moment is actually one of the most important scenes in the movie. The scene builds on a heartwarming moment between Bloodsport and Ratcatcher 2 before the gang arrives at the Corto Maltese pub where we can learn more about their characters.
Despite all the gestures between Peacemaker and Bloodsport, the two let their guard down, and Peacemaker totally acted like a lovable jerk. First, he admits that the mouse is part of the team and that he dances awkwardly. Save this moment to the Peacemaker, which will make his later betrayals less impactful. Here, Peacemaker comes across as a normal and cool guy, which allows us to connect with him on an emotional level. It also puts our guard down because the Peacemaker seems to really bond with the team, so his betrayal is really shocking as he actually seems to be getting more and more fond of the men and women in Suicide Squad. But the moment wasn’t just adding layers to Peacemaker’s role, it was the cohesion of the entire team.
Rick Flagg and Bloodsport drink and laugh, highlighting their long-standing friendship. This dance sequence is to show a different and kinder side to these characters. It even highlights the loneliness of King Shark when he’s forced to wait in his car while the gang goes on a mission. Moments like these are crucial because they allow viewers to get to know these men and women better. There’s a reason Steven Spielberg’s favorite scene in Jaws is when the three main characters sit at a boat table and exchange war stories of terrifying battles. It’s a great source of character development and an intimate moment that most movies tend to skip. As crazy as it sounds, a movie can’t have just one character solely focused on his/her mission. They need to let their guard down and open up so the audience can understand what makes them tick. The dance sequence says a lot by saying a little. There is no tragic backstory expressed here, nor is there a single moment connected to a later, larger puzzle. Say what you think about the James Gunn movies, but the filmmaker is a master at crafting weird character combinations. It’s not the thrilling action or the funny plot that most people rave about him, but the way he’s able to make this strange character resonate. At this moment, we can identify with Peacemaker. Who dances like a fool in a club? Or have a few drinks with their friends every now and then and have a good laugh? Heck, who doesn’t want a bunch of women dancing around them? Action movies are mainly notorious for skipping key scenes like this. It can’t be just action, action, action! John McClain’s private discussion with Sgt. Powell is another example of such a moment. The dance sequence may seem like the least valuable scene in the entire movie, but it’s one of the reasons you end up caring about the bad guys in a James Gunn feature film.
