Maria LaGuerta was a key figure in the first seven seasons of the Dexter series and led the bulk of the investigation. LaGuerta handles the political side of the job, while officers such as Sergeant James Doakes and Angel Batista handle the detective work.
While she’s very good at being a police officer, Ragueta might not be the most popular character in the series. Dexter: New Blood reminds viewers of this, so let’s take a look at who killed Maria LaGuerta.
Who Killed Maria Lagerta in Dexter?
Maria was killed in Dexter season 7. In the series, it was a character named Debra who killed Raguta at the end of season 7. In Dexter’s original book, it was Dexter’s brother Brian who killed her in the first book. She was stabbed to death.
LaGuerta and Debra were initially quite hostile, but their relationship improved significantly as the series progressed. However, over the course of the series, LaGuerta and Debra faced off again. This happened while LaGuerta was investigating the Bay Harbour Butcher, so Dexter decided they needed to kill her.
Dexter decides the course of action should be to kill Estrada and Raguta, then it’s as if they were murdering each other. Before he can execute the plan, Debra shows up and they argue. LaGuerta then wakes up and tries to convince Debra to kill her brother. This backfired, however, as Debra ended up killing Raguta in order to protect Dexter. So, in Dexter season 7, Maria Lagerta was killed by Debra from a gunshot wound.
All because Maria has become too much of a threat. After Doakes died, she became so close that Raguta didn’t believe he was the butcher of Bay Harbor. She decides to prove his innocence that the real Gulf Harbor Butcher is still there and responsible for the murder of Travis Marshall. So when Maria Lagerta finds out that Dexter is the Gulf Harbor Butcher, Dexter knows she’s a threat. She gave her life because of her wisdom in the situation and fighting for justice.
New Blood Returns Season 7
The spin-off miniseries titled Dexter: New Blood begins in October 2021 and is a reboot of the 2006-2013 hit series Dexter. New Blood sees serial killer Michael C. Hall reunited with his estranged son Harrison, whom he left at the end of the original series.
The ending also sees Dexter’s girlfriend, Sheriff Angela Bishop, arrest him for the murder of Matt Caldwell because she knew he was the Bay Harbor Butcher. Then it was discovered that Angel Batista had been investigating Maria Laguerta’s murder for years.
Angel then drove to pick up Dexter and bring him back to Florida, where he faced the death penalty. However, this did not happen because Dexter escaped.
Dexter was then killed by his son Harrison as he sought revenge for his father’s murder of Sergeant Logan while escaping prison. Harrison escapes the killing and Angela Bishop gives him a rich escape plan to start a new life in a different area. This suggests there could be a spinoff focused on Harrison, as Dexter’s story can’t go on any longer. So, Dexter fans – pray!
