Who is Sookie’s Best Love for True Blood?
Announced that HBO will be rebooting its beloved late 2000s/early 2010s supernatural southern gothic series true love is like blood, a collective sigh of anticipation and confusion has taken over the show’s fanbase. It seems silly to reboot a show that has been off the air for about 8 years or so, but alas, it’s happening. While waiting and hoping the reboot will match the original’s brutal entertainment, it’s still fun to reminisce about the memorable characters Alan Ball and Charlene Harris made. Not a great series in terms of prestige, despite having one of the worst series endings ever, true love is like blood It’s a great feeling of guilt. Sookie Stackhouse is the protagonist of the series, but she’s far from perfect, in fact, she’s made some pretty horrific mistakes throughout the series’ seven seasons. Most of these mistakes are due to her often mismatched couplings throughout the show. Sookie had 4 major relationships throughout the show, and then there was Sam Merlotte, who got an honorable mention…well, kinda. Below is a ranking of Sookie’s best relationships. Oh, and Wolo.
Eric
Being number one is sure to get a lot of different opinions, but Eric makes the most sense to me, even though he’s ultimately incompatible with Sookie. Eric Northam’s savage violence and knee-crunching outbursts of animal nature quickly made him a fan favorite. That, and his cool and reserved attitude, is backed up by a sharp wit and a cold sense of humor. At over 1,000 years old, Eric had a gritty spirit of brutality, sex appeal, and leadership skills throughout his thousands of years as a vampire. So why is he Sookie’s favorite? Well, of course there are arguments against this. When you really look at Eric’s long history as a vampire and consider his great love over the centuries, Suki is the exact opposite of the lover he was looking for. When the dust of the series settled, we felt that Sookie was just another in a series of passionate love affairs that Eric experienced during his long tenure on Earth. Sookie is also conflicted about Eric, and while it might be unsettling for some to hear – Bill is actually her love interest – more on that disaster later. To me, Eric is the most charismatic, loyal, and engaging of all Sookie’s hobbies.
Alcide
Alcide Herveaux is a werewolf who also happens to have the most stable relationship suki once had throughout the series. Unlike Eric and Bill, with Alcide, Sookie doesn’t have to wait until nightfall to meet her beloved—and the two are a good match. During their pairing, there were times when Sookie seemed a little tired of Alcide, which was only natural after living the last few years of her life on the brink, as passion was so closely associated with self-destructive hedonism. Alcide is a decent guy, apart from being very pretty – a trait shared by all of Sookie’s hobbies. It still stings how everything ends up with Alcide, and if it weren’t for the way the writers handled it, Sookie would almost certainly have lived a stable life with Alcide.
bill
Trying to put Bill Compton in third is almost foolish. After all, no one can question that he’s Sookie’s number one — even when she’s with Eric and Alcide — but there are some major issues with the relationship. In Season 1 of 2008, pretty much everyone was crazy about Sookie and Bill, and in those early seasons, it’s easy to see why based on their perfect chemistry with each other. But as soon as we start season 3, Bill starts to be a terrible partner. Aside from the long-running Bill/Lilith drama, his whole demeanor changed when we got to season four. Not so much his cheating on Sookie, which is of course a major part of it, but also his ego – a sense of righteous entitlement and a hypocritical virtue that is hard to accept after a certain point. When we got to the final season, I didn’t care about Bill begging for real death, because his character died long before that. Also, why would you want Sookie to do something like that?
Volo
In Season 6, Sookie learns that she has been with a man named Volo. Wolo starts out as mysterious and polarizing, but then becomes incredibly charming, sweet, sexy, and then… instantly one of the worst characters in the franchise’s history. There’s not much to say here other than how Sookie and Warlow’s relationship has developed, but for now, the two are a little bit together, so he has to rank.
The case for and against Sam Merlot
Sookie and Sam are never together in the series, although at the end of the Harris book series a completely different one. Sam is perfect for Sookie in many ways, but there’s also something about him that makes him a little skeptical about how he presents himself to her. At the start of the episode, Sam is Sookie’s boss, but he’s also borderline obsessed with her, and the results are creepy — even though he does care about her well-being. As the series progresses, Sam gets more and more jealous that Sookie doesn’t seem to be interested in him, and he becomes a bit of a jerk. Sookie never had any desire to get along with Sam, though she did jokingly ask why they never got together later in the series. Ultimately, Sam and Sookie are boring together, and it’s always Bill, Eric, or Alcide at the end. In fact, it turns out, none of them are.
