Utah officials announced Monday that they had discovered a strange metal structure deep within the Red Rock Canyon National Preserve.
The first people to spot the feature were actually wildlife officials who conducted a helicopter flyover on November 18.

Although officials declined to reveal the boulder’s exact location, modern satellite and computing technology has facilitated the discovery of its precise location.
Among those who got started was a Reddit user who post There are two links to Google Earth and Google Maps locations in the subreddit r/FindTheMonolith (which already has 3,500 members).
So-called internet detectives tracked and geolocated the building in just two days.

He allegedly drove six hours overnight after discovering the Reddit post and was the first to arrive. Soon, however, others who saw the same coordinates joined him.

The prevailing theory is that it is a piece of conceptual art, or “land art”. Potential artists include the late John McCracken – who passed away in 2011, so that means the structure has been in place on its site for almost a decade.
