Who is AJ Olmendinger? NASCAR Race Champion Career History Revealed
Fresh off a thrilling win for the part-time Caulig team in Indianapolis and his first cup win in seven years, who is NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger?
part-timers win
Amid the chaos of the NASCAR Cup race in Indianapolis, California native Allmendinger raced for the part-time Caulig Racing team.
The 39-year-old, who drives full-time for the team in the second-tier XFinity series, is competing in his fourth race of the season.
After finishing in the top 10 at Daytona Road and the Tour of the Americas, he finished 29th in the US Road Race.
He qualified eighth fastest in the inaugural cup race of the IMS road race.
During the race, he was able to navigate the roadside chaos of the race.
Driving car number 16, he inherited the lead on the final lap when Chase Briscoe kicked Denny Hamlin off the car.
It was Kaulig’s first cup win in Game 7, ahead of a full-time 2022 game.
Olmendinger scored his first win since the 2014 Watkins Glen race.
Despite the win, it didn’t qualify the man known as “The Dinger” for the playoffs.
Since he didn’t make a full-time schedule in the 2021 Cup, he’s ineligible for the playoffs.
How does he feel about victory?
“Honestly, we don’t really have a car that wins the race at absolute speed, maybe around seventh to tenth,” he explained after the race.
“I was speeding up in the pits so I just continued to feel like yesterday, so put us at the back and we’re just fighting hard.
“I think we might be in the top 10 and have a solid day.
“But yeah, once the chaos started happening and we started getting closer to the front, my restart at the front was pretty good.
“I think we restarted 17th with eight in the game and were able to get through all this chaos to get to seventh.
“I thought, well, now we’re at least shouting its distance.
“The second time it started again, and by the third time, it was like, well, now we have a chance.”
What games has he played in in the past?
Allmendinger has been making his mark in American motorsports since 2004, when he competed in the now-defunct Championship Car Series.
After five victories in 2006, he left the series in favor of racing — with Red Bull Racing’s NASCAR team.
This proved disastrous as he was often ineligible for competition.
In 2009, he moved to Richard Petty Motorsports to ride for the seven-time Cup winner’s namesake team.
During his three years at RPM, Allmendinger made another move for the 2012 campaign – switching to Penske.

He was released from the captain’s squad halfway through that year after testing positive for a prohibited substance.
After receiving treatment, he was allowed to play again.
In 2013, he again played a part-time Cup and IndyCar offense for Penske.
Despite his controversial debut at the Indy 500, a loose seatbelt ruined his chances of winning.
During that time, and to this day, Allmendinger continues to race sports cars.
He is a one-time (2012) champion of the 24 Hours of Daytona and has raced enduros since 2006.
Full-time cup career and plans for 2022
In 2014, Allmendinger found a full-time driver at JTG Daugherty Racing.
He will stay with the team until the end of 2018.
In his five full seasons, his best finish was a win at Watkins Glen in 2014, a career-best 13th in the standings.
Despite the readiness, Doherty chose to bring Ryan Preece on board in 2019, ending the Allmendinger’s time.
He then took part in a part-time Kaulig gig.
In 2022, Kaulig will enter the cup full-time, while Almendinger will not.
He will tackle XFinity full-time, hoping to complete the title challenge.
As will be the case in 2021, he will compete in cup competitions, competing in selected events, including road races.
