‘Canelo’ Alvarez became the undisputed super middleweight world champion against Caleb Plant, but who are the undisputed six world champions in boxing?
The likes of Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield have been undisputed world champions in the past at their respective weights.
However, changes in the mid-2000s redefine what it means to be the undisputed world champion today.
The WBO was officially recognized as a sanctioning body, which brought about a change in the status of the Unified Championship.
Now, to become the undisputed world champion, a boxer must hold the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO belts at their respective weights.
Only six boxers at the time managed to become undisputed world champions, but who were they?
The undisputed champion of boxing
The first boxer to become the undisputed world champion was American Bernard Hopkins in 2004.
Hopkins is a middleweight who originally became the IBF World Champion in 1995.
He will go on to beat Oscar De La Hoya after knocking him out in the ninth round in Las Vegas.
That earned Hopkins the undisputed middleweight title — until he lost it in the next fight.
It was July 2005 against Germaine Taylor.
It was a divisive decision — also in Las Vegas, as Hopkins got beat by Taylor.

Switch to light middleweight
More than a decade later, until August 2017, there was another unified world champion in boxing.
Terence Crawford unified light welterweight against Julius Indongo in Nebraska.
A few weeks later, Crawford vacated his WBO belt — which was to move the weight up to welterweight.
In May 2021, British boxer Josh Taylor matched Crawford’s feat by unifying the lightweight belt.

Taylor has won the WBA and IBF belts, but won the WBC and WBO titles with Jose Ramirez in Nevada.
Taylor, from Scotland, is the only Briton to be the undisputed boxing world champion since the rules were reset.
heavyweight champion
Today, Oleksander Usyk may have a better reputation as a heavyweight champion, but he unified heavyweight in July 2018.
The Ukrainian beat Murat Gasiyev at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow shortly after the World Cup.
Usyk defeated Tony Bellew in his only fight as unified heavyweight champion.
He will move up to the heavyweight division seeking a fight with Anthony Joshua.

Usyk will beat Joshua to win the IBF, WBO and IBO titles in 2021.
Tyson Fury wins the WBC belt after beating Deontay Wilder.
