Some Lesser Known Facts About Vartika Joshi
- Vartika Joshi is best known for being the captain of INSV Tarini’s first six all-female Indian crew. Completed their 254-day circumnavigation of the globe, which began on September 10, 2017 from Goa. The other crew members were Lieutenant Vijaya Devi (Education Department), Lieutenant Pratibha Jamwal (Air Traffic Control), Lieutenant P Swathi (ATC) and Lieutenant Payal Gupta (Education Officer).
- Vartika had earlier sailed the sea world aboard the Mhadei boat.
- She also participated in the Republic Day parade in 2015.
- Vartika is rooted in Uttarakhand. One of the hill states of India.

They had to spend 10-12 days in complete darkness. They returned to Brazil using the ancient way of sailing; due to GPS and electronic navigation systems not working properly.
- On May 21, 2018, the Indian Navy sailing ship INSV Tarini entered the port of Goa; after completing a historic circumnavigation of the globe.
- INSV Tarini is a 56-foot domestic sailing sailing vessel that entered service with the Indian Navy in February 2017.
- The expedition led by Vartika was named “Navika Sagar Parikrama”.
- The idea of a global circumnavigation by Indian female crew members is in line with the national policy to empower women to reach their full potential.
- On September 10, 2017, Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the presence of Manohar Parrikar (Chief Minister of Goa) and Admiral Sunil Lanba (Commander-in-Chief of Indian Navy) from the Port of Goa for the mission ceremony.
- During the 254-day voyage, the vessel visited five countries – Australia, New Zealand, the Falkland Islands (UK), South Africa and Mauritius; covering more than 22,000 nautical miles. In each of these countries, the crew was welcomed by the Indian diaspora. Also from the local community.
- During the voyage, the INSV Tarini complies with all circumnavigation standards, ie. Crosses all longitudes, crosses the equator twice, and the three major capes (Cape Dewwin, Cape Horn, and Cape of Good Hope).
- The ship and crew encountered rough seas on numerous occasions during their voyage, including extremely cold weather, stormy conditions in the Southern Ocean, winds in excess of 60 knots and waves as high as 7 meters (when crossing the Pacific).
