‘Too relaxed’: Hoddle says he sees change in Liverpool star affecting his season
Glenn Hoddle believes he has spotted a change in Trent Alexander-Arnold this season that has hurt the Liverpool full-back’s hopes in England, he talks about Glenn Hoddle Football Show Podcast.
Alexander-Arnold has gone from being PFA Youth Player of the Year in 2019/20 to being left out of Gareth Southgate’s latest international squad.
It’s a clear indication of how inconsistent the Liverpool full-back’s season has been.
Southgate told by guardian: “I don’t think Trent has performed at the level he has found over the last few years.”
Trent’s troubles
Hoddle thinks he knows why Alexander-Arnold’s form has declined.
The former England boss said: “As for Trent Alexander-Arnold, I think he’s a very good player. I’ve seen small changes in him this year. He’s a young man and it could be him (abandoning him) One thing needed.
“Liverpool have defensive issues in the back four. I see him doing things a little too flamboyant, a little too relaxed.
“I don’t think his mind is completely there, I think he’s had a cold season.”

Hoddle’s words are more polite
However, Hoddle does feel that the 22-year-old still has enough quality to earn himself an England recall.
He said: “(Alexander-Arnold) still played some great passes. He still came up and did some great things. His defense was just shut down a bit.
“I saw him when he first came in as a young full-back. When they played, he was for Manchester City against Sane and he defended his life.
“(Trent) came out on top in one-on-one games. He also stepped up and did that there.
“He has to get back on his feet. If he does, he will be back in the England squad because he is very good at strikers.”
Euro out of reach?
Ironically, Alexander-Arnold’s level was already starting to pick up before Southgate announced his squad.
Unfortunately for the Reds right-back, his overall performances this season have been sub-par.
That puts his dream of competing in the European Championships in serious jeopardy this summer.
But dreams are to come true. Alexander-Arnold just has to work harder to make them a reality.
