Who is Henry Louis Gates?
Henry Louis Gates Jr., a noted Harvard scholar, was born on September 16, 1950, in Kaiser, West Virginia.
His father worked as a cleaner in a paper mill, while his mother cleaned the house. Gates, who earned a history degree from Yale University in 1973, also took time off to visit Africa and work as an anesthesiologist at a hospital in Tanzania.
Gates also attended Clare College in Cambridge, where he chose to pursue a doctorate in literature rather than history. He is known for finding and restoring the lost literature of African American writers and for his seminal theories on African and African American literature.
Gates now hosts “Find Your Roots” on PBS and is the executive producer, host and writer of “Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song.”

When Gates was 14, he suffered severe injuries that required multiple surgeries. These operations left him permanently limp.
This injury is sustained while playing football.He suffered a hairline fracture in the ball-and-socket joint of his hip, initially misdiagnosed As a psychosomatic disorder (physical or mental illness caused by mental conflict or stress).
In the past, Gates has written that such misdiagnoses are influenced by racist bias, having previously told doctors he wanted to study medicine, too.
His right leg is now two inches shorter than his left, and he needs a cane to get around.
