Some Lesser Known Facts About Team Captain Varun Singh
- Captain Wallen Singh is an Indian Air Force officer who served as an instructor at the Defence Service Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, Tamil Nadu. He died of severe burns on December 15, 2021 at Bengaluru Military Hospital, where he was being treated following the plane crash that killed CDS Bipin Rawat and 12 others on December 8, 2021.
- Singh joined the Defence Force after being elected to the NDA in 2004. He was a test pilot for the IAF Light Combat (LCA) Squadron in Bangalore and was appointed Wing Commander on 19 June 2017 before being promoted to IAF Group Captain.

- In September 2021, Captain Singh wrote a letter to students at the school, in which he revealed that he was an average student, barely getting a first grade in the 12 standard, but he had a passion for aircraft and aviation. He wrote:
I’m a very average student who barely got first place in 12 classes. Even in sports and other extracurricular activities, I was average, even though I was named subject in Year 12. But I am passionate about airplanes and aviation. “
- On August 15, 2021, the country’s third highest medal for valor, Shaurya Chakra, was awarded to Varun, then Wing Commander of the IAF Tejas Fighter Squadron. He was commended by President Ram Nath Kovind for his courage in handling Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas fighter jets during the emergency on 12 October 2020. The aircraft suffered a system failure and major technical problems during Singh’s sortie, which resulted in a total loss. Despite an air emergency at around 10,000 feet, Varun managed to regain control of the aircraft and land his Tejas safely. The Defense Department said the cockpit pressurization failed at high altitudes. It issued a statement that read:
he [Varun Singh] Correctly identify the failure and begin descending to a lower altitude landing. On descent, the flight control system failed, causing the plane to lose control completely. It was an unprecedented and catastrophic failure that had never happened…Despite extreme physical and mental stress in extremely life-threatening conditions, he maintained exemplary composure and regained control of the aircraft, thereby showing Extraordinary flying skills. “
- Captain Singh wrote to school students on September 18, 2021:
I believe in this prestigious award [Shaurya Chakra] Thank you to everyone who has contacted me over the years in school, in the NDA, and later in the Air Force, because I firmly believe that my actions that day were the result of the training and guidance of my teachers. - On December 8, 2021, when an IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter was flying from Delhi to Surul, the captain suffered a tragic accident, carrying Varun, Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, Madhulika Rawat (wife of Bipin Rawat) ) and 11 others crashed nearby Kunur in Tamil Nadu. Singh, who accompanied the helicopter as a liaison officer, was the only survivor of the 14 officers on board, according to the Indian Air Force. The team leader has 80-85% burns and he needs life support. He was initially treated for severe burns at a military hospital in Wellington, but was later transferred to Bengaluru.
