Lando Norris withdraws from Belgian qualifying after crash
After taking the fastest time in the first two stages of qualifying after Spa, Norris crashed badly on the first flying lap of the third quarter.
Things got worse between Q2 and Q3, with the riders switching to full-wet tires for the pole battle.
Norris was the first car to start his third quarter with more and more water on the track.
The McLaren suddenly oversteered as it climbed the Eau Rogue corner on the first lap.
Norris corrected, but was spat on the inside barrier.
The back of the McLaren was destroyed when Norris skidded on the track and into the runway area on the other side.
The Briton quickly confirmed by radio to passing Sebastian Vettel and his team that he was fine.
Norris was taken to hospital for an elbow X-ray.
Team boss Andreas Seidl has confirmed there are no fractures and Norris is apparently ready for tomorrow’s Grand Prix.
Vettel was quick to speak his mind over the radio, angrily expressing his opinion after checking Norris.
What does this mean for Lando Norris after his qualifying crash?
With all clearances from the medical rep, Norris will take a place on the starting line.
McLaren has confirmed that a chassis change is not required, which means Norris doesn’t need a pit start.
However, he will use a new gearbox that will drop him five places on the grid.
As a result, he will start in 14th, just behind Fernando Alonso of the Alps.
What happened to the rest of the Belgian GP F1 qualifying?
Immediately after the accident, the red flag was thrown, with 8 minutes and 59 seconds remaining on the clock in the third quarter.
After waiting for the track to dry out, the FIA resumed racing at 16:45 pm local time.
Max Verstappen took pole for Red Bull, while George Russell won a shocking front row for Williams.
Lewis Hamilton will be third, ahead of Norris’ team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.
Vettel finished fifth.
Valtteri Bottas is eighth, but will drop five places after being penalized for a first-lap accident in Hungary.
