Who is Paralympian Kaleo Maclay?
Kaleo Okalani Kanahele Maclay was born on June 11, 1996 in Oklahoma.
She was the starting setter for the U.S. women’s volleyball team, which she helped win gold at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
The Tokyo Paralympics will be McClay’s third Olympics – and first as a mother, she told Us Weekly.
The seated volleyball player was born with clubfoot, and surgery in her first year included the removal of her calf muscles.
according to Movement spectrumMaclay’s mother encouraged her to get involved in some mobility activities and taught her how to adapt.
She started playing volleyball at the age of ten and was introduced to seated volleyball soon after.
According to her Team USA ProfileIn 2009, at the age of 12, McClay began training with the U.S. Paralympic seated volleyball team.

“Because I was really fully mobile from a young age and (my disability) was congenital, I really learned to use (my legs) like I normally would,” McLee told Reuters Team USA.
“So I do have a lot of constraints, but it doesn’t really limit me from playing volleyball or playing sports. I just have to get used to what it is.”
Seated volleyball requires the net to be lowered and requires players to remain seated at all times.
Kaleo Maclay: Husband and Children
Kaleo Maclay married Matt Maclay in August 2016.
The couple have a son, Duke, who was born in 2017.
Talking about not being able to see her son during the Paralympics, McClay told American Magazine“It’s a big sacrifice to leave him for so long…it’s the longest I’ve been away from him, but I’m really excited. I think he’ll be fun to watch.”
McClay, who is pregnant with Duke, competes in the 2017 ParaVolley World Super 6.
Maclay owns two businesses – Flower & Flour, a coffee shop/bakery/florist in downtown Oklahoma; and Cookies By Kaleo, which sells custom decorated cookies.
Talking about her business, McClay told healthy: “I started baking right after the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. I asked myself, ‘What do I want to do and who do I want to be when this is over?’…so I started experimenting with cookie decorating Rediscover my creativity.”

In addition to her husband Matthew, McClay is also a youth pastor.
Hope for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games
On Tuesday, August 17, McClay posted a video to Instagram in which she addresses the Paralympic Games.
She wrote: “As we wait for our chance to defend the gold medal, I just ask for prayers – for our team, our health and our mental health…
“Gold is nearby and I can feel it – so add that to the prayer list too and another piece of gold will have the beauty of resilience, hope and unity.”
Team USA The game is scheduled for Saturday, August 28.
