- John Key’s father, George Key, was a British immigrant and a veteran of the Spanish Civil War and World War II.
- Key and his two sisters were raised by their mother in Christchurch, a suburb of Bryndwr.
- His mother was an Austrian Jewish immigrant; Kay was the third New Zealand prime minister of Jewish descent after Julius Vogel and Francis Bell.
