Penske driver Will Power took a timely victory at the IndyCar road race in Indianapolis — his first of the season. But what are the standings with four rounds remaining after the retirement of points leader Alex Palou?
It’s too late for power to win the championship
After a frustrating start to the season, including a loss in Detroit when the car wouldn’t restart, Will Ball still holds a proud record.
The Australian finished third but passed leader Pato Oward in a first-round pit stop.
Ball, who bumped into teammates Simon Pagnord and Scott McLaughlin in Nashville last week, had no issues after that.
The field was gathered in a late cautious period, but Ball held off former Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean.

Despite winning his 40th career win, Power is 137 points behind leader Alex Palou.
There are four rounds left, but the 2018 Indy 500 winner is unlikely to give Penske a belated title.
Elsewhere, seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson had his best finish at IndyCar.
The No. 48 Ganassi driver did well in the race, putting his best result on par with 19th.
No points for points leader
Ganassi driver Alex Palou leads the standings with 415 points.
The Spaniard struggled with engine problems in all races, including getting stuck in engine-lean power mode.
Despite being set to score, Palou retired late with smoke coming out of his car.
This allowed the laggard to eat up his points lead, sitting at 42 points before the race.
Fifth was enough for Oward to cut Palu’s lead to just 21 points to 394.
The Arrow McLaren SP driver overtook Palu’s teammate Scott Dixon for second place in the standings.
Six-time champion Dixon had 381 points.
Joseph Newgarden (8th) and Nashville champion Marcus Ericsson (9th) also took points from Palo.
This pair has 360 and 353 respectively.
With just four rounds remaining, it’s unlikely anyone outside the top five will challenge for the title.
Top five points
- Alex Palau – 415 points
- Pato Oward – 394
- Scott Dixon – 381
- Joseph Newgarden – 360
- Marcus Ericsson – 353
What games are there this season?
The next event is the Oval at the Gateway next weekend.
It was the first oval race since the Indy 500 in May.
Grosjean will make his oval debut at the event.
After switching from F1, the former Haas driver was reluctant to go straight to the oval, but has experience.
However, he recently tested it at the Gateway and declared himself ready.
Portland and Leguna Seca then play back-to-back on September 12 and 19.
The season-ending battle takes place on the streets of Long Beach—the race takes place on September 26.
