Joining Jason Manford at the 2020 Royal Variety Show is Malawi comedian and “anti-social commentator” Daliso Chaponda.
Who is Daliso Chaponda of Royal Variety?
Daliso Chaponda was born in Malawi in 1979 and grew up between Malawi, Thailand, Australia and Switzerland. He studied computer programming and English literature at two Canadian universities before pursuing comedy.
Then, in 2001, Chaponda started his comedy career. The next year, he had a headline show, Feed This Black Man.
Chaponda moved to the UK in 2006, where he gained popularity opening For big-name comedians like John Bishop. During this time, he also performed in South Africa and Australia.
Daliso’s “Laughrica” Incident
In 2012, Chaponda joked about the Malawi flag on the “Laughrica” tour. As a result, the Malawi government threatened to arrest him for insulting the flag.
In a 2013 interview with David Aspinall from Mancunian Matters, Chaponda discussed event. He described it as “something that has to be dealt with”.
He’s also grateful that those around him “know how to handle things diplomatically” (Aspinal’s words).
Discussing these events, Chaponda said, “You’re never really afraid of something bad happening, you’re only afraid of when some subordinate gets stuck in the moment and makes a power trip”.

In addition to entering the final stages of ITV’s reality show Britain’s Got Talent in 2017, Chaponda has also Appeared On several BBC TV and radio programmes.
Notably, his appearances include QI, The Apprentice: You’re Fired, Good Night Britain, The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4) and The Now Show.
He is also the Rose d’Or nominated Citizen of Nowhere writer, creator and host.
In addition to a burgeoning comedy career, Chaponda describes herself as a “prolific fiction writer.” He has written science fiction, murder mystery and fantasy, and is currently working on a novel.
