As Korean dramas and anime rule the internet, the meaning of ‘Ahjussi’ is explored
Whether you’re entering the Dangerous Convenience Store, the Squid Game, or any of the other cultural exports South Korea has had in recent months, you’re likely exposed to more Korean words than ever before—”soy sauce” and”gambu” is the prime example of this. But what does “ahjussi” mean in English and where might you have seen it written or heard of it before?
‘Ahjussi’ meaning exploration
Sometimes transliterated as “ajusshi” or “ajeosshi”, basically Korean “ahjussi” method “Middle-aged man” or “married man”. It is similar (though not identical) to the English word “Mister”.
People use “ahjussi” when referring to an unfamiliar adult man, although some liken it to the more familiar “uncle”. other Say it “literally means uncle” – people may use it in different ways in different parts of Korea or in different diaspora.
Note that while native English speakers tend to use the word “uncle” literally – i.e. specifically to refer to your mother or father’s brother – many other cultures use it more generally to refer to your close (male) friend. family. The same goes for words like “cousin.”

According to the description, rather than a general term for an unfamiliar gentleman, ajussi Its meaning comes from a specific cultural phenomenon. And, like most cultural tropes, it’s unique to the culture in which it inhabits.

What do people mean when they use “ahjussi” on Twitter?
With the likes of BTS, Anderson Paak, Squid Game and Parasite bringing Korean culture to mainstream audiences (Anderson is of Korean descent – and a Korean wife – and speaks some Korean, although he can’t sing in it), such as ajussi Flying around on twitter every day.

Squid Game actors Lee Jung Jae and Park Hae Soo tease their Instagram followers with ‘ahjussi’ selfie earlier this year.
The term has been popping up a lot on Twitter lately. Some people use it when referring to characters in the comic book series Dangerous Convenience Store (below); others wish their favorite actors a happy birthday.
