About Alejandro Casona: Spanish Writer (1903 – 1965)
Alejandro Rodriguez Alvarez, as. .to be known Alejandro Casona (March 3, 1903 – September 17, 1965) was a Spanish poet and playwright, born in Besulo, Spain, and a member of the 27 generation. Casona received a bachelor’s degree in Gijón and later studied at the University of Murcia. After Franco’s rise in 1936, he, like many Spanish intellectuals, was forced to leave Spain. He lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, until April 1962 when he finally returned to Spain.

As a professional teacher, Casona expressed a strong educational mission, inspired by the ideals of a liberal educational institution, and defended progressive values in a variety of cultural outreach projects such as the educational mission created during the Second Spanish Republic. Likewise, he has produced many excellent adaptations of classic drama and narrative for adults and teens. Moreover, in all his original theatrical writing, he knew how to deliver a message with a deep and clear social commitment without giving up his undeniable poetic inspiration.
Casona went into exile after the Spanish Civil War, and after passing through Mexico, he settled for a long time in Argentina. In this country, he enjoyed extraordinary criticism and commercial success. He did not return to Spain until 1962 until his death in Madrid on September 17, 1965. One of the most recognizable figures on the Spanish, Mexican and South American stages, the return of the aliens was a huge disappointment, as the leading writers and theater critics of the time considered his work outdated and a product of an era.
