Albrecht Ludwig Boblinger (24 June 1770 in Ulm – 28 January 1829 in Ulm), also known as ulm tailorknown for building a working flying machine, presumably a hang glider.
early life
Berblinger is the seventh child of a poor family. When his father died when he was 13, he was sent to an orphanage. There, he was forced to become a tailor, although he wanted to be a watchmaker. He became a master craftsman at the age of 21, but he was still interested in machinery. In 1808, he invented the first articulated prosthesis in his spare time.

One of Berblinger’s inventions was the hang glider. He has been studying it for years, improving it and watching owls in flight. People made fun of him, and he was threatened with exclusion from the guild. He was ordered to pay a hefty fine for working outside the guild. Still, he put his entire income into his project. King Frederick I of Württemberg took an interest in his work and sponsored him with 20 louis.
On the evening of May 30, 1811, he attempted to demonstrate the glider in the presence of the king, his three sons and the Bavarian crown prince. The king and a large number of citizens waited for the flight, but Boblinger called off the flight, claiming that his glider was damaged. The next day, he moved from a higher position – Adlerbastei (Eagle Fortress). The king had left by this time, but his brother Duke Heinrich and the princes stayed to watch. Burlinger waited for a long time, and finally a policeman pushed him, and Burlinger fell into the Danube (Danube). Other versions of the account made no mention of the police and claimed that the temperature difference on the frigid Danube (the Danube) restricted thermal updrafts, so the glider failed to lift. He survived and was rescued by fishermen, but his reputation was ruined and his work suffered. He was 58 when he died in hospital.
The story of the tailor who tried to fly subsequently caused some escapes and insinuations in 19th century publications. When William Busch painted a man falling into a creek in his comic strip “Max and Moritz,” he could count on his readers to have some awareness. It wasn’t until the end of the century that Otto Lilienthal demonstrated the feasibility of heavier-than-air flight.
reception
- can be found at the Ulm City Hall (City Hall) suspended above the stairwell near Standesamt (Registry) where civil weddings are held. There is also a reconstruction of another glider on the ground floor of building B in the Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) Ulm.
- In 1986, Berblinger’s glider was shown to be capable of sustained flight, but even with most modern gliders, crossing the Danube is nearly impossible.
- Bertolt Brecht wrote a ballad about Berblinger in 1934.
