Alberto Marcos Rey (born February 15, 1974 in Camarmadé Estruelas, Madrid) is a retired Spanish footballer who plays as a left-back.
After failing to establish himself at Real Madrid, he spent 15 professional seasons at Valladolid, enduring two relegations and one promotion, making nearly 500 official appearances.
club career
After coming out of Real Madrid, Marcos played in three La Liga games for the 1995 national champions, making his debut on 17 April 1994 in a 1-0 away win against Sevilla. He effectively targeted Bulgaria international Christo Stoichkov in the subsequent game against Barcelona, but never made it to the first team.
In the 1995-96 season, Marcos signed with Real Valladolid and became a defensive mainstay for more than a decade, making nearly 500 appearances in all competitions, eventually winning the team captaincy. He missed just eight league games in total from 1997 to 2002, and at the end of the 2008-09 season became the club’s top player in full and first division games; two seasons earlier, with Castile He returned to the top flight after a two-year absence with Leon, where he contributed 29 games and scored 1 goal.
Marcos suffered a variety of injuries the following season, playing in just 21 league games and completing just 12, his third-worst commitment in his 15-year spell at Valladolid. In July 2010, at the age of 36 – after the team’s relegation – he decided to leave the club, keeping his league appearances (438), more official games (471) and more (361) and minutes played (31.610 minutes). Marcos signed with SD Huesca in Serie B later this month, reuniting with former Valladolid coach Onesimo Sanchez. He was the undisputed starter this season as the Aragonese retained their league status and retired from football in June 2011 to become Valladolid’s football director.
