Alberto Guani Carrara (14 June 1877 – 26 November 1956) was a Uruguayan jurist, diplomat, Vice President and President of the Senate from 1943 to 1947.
Alberto Guani was born on June 14, 1877 in Montevideo. He studied law and became a renowned lawyer specializing in international law. He studied law in Montevideo, and after receiving his Juris Doctor degree, he taught at the University of Montevideo. Earlier in his career, Dr. Guani wrote articles on political and economic issues for El Siglo and El Tiempo newspapers, and contributed to other publications. After becoming a lawyer, Dr. Guani partnered with Dr. Eduardo Acevedo and founded his law firm, which handled the country’s first divorce case since progressive presidents Jose Batlle and Ordonez had just legislated for divorce.

In Uruguayan politics, Guani is a member of the Colorado Party. A member of the Colorado Party, Guarney began his parliamentary career in 1907. He was elected as a state representative from 1907 to 1910, and became a member of the House of Representatives or a state representative during 1910.
Guani became the first Uruguayan representative to the League of Nations and was subsequently elected President of the Council General Assembly by his colleagues in 1927. He was the first Uruguayan to teach a course in international law at The Hague Academy. Guani fought against fascism at the Pan-American Conference (1938), and at the Third Consultative Conference (1941) he laid the groundwork for the realization of the Inter-American Military Agreement, through the announced regulations. Between 1939 and 1943, Guani served as Minister of Foreign Affairs. As Prime Minister of the Republic of Uruguay under President Alfredo Baldomir, Guani played an important role in the diplomatic battle with the German battleship Graf Spee. On December 13, 1939, the German battleship sought refuge off the coast of Uruguay in what became known as the Battle of the Riverbed.
In the November 1942 election, Guani was selected as Juan José de Amezaga’s running mate when he won the Colorado Party primary. When duly elected, he served as Uruguay’s vice president from 1943 to 1947, succeeding Alfredo Navarro in that position. He himself was succeeded by Luis Batlle Berres as Vice President of Uruguay in 1947.
