About Alberto Camenzind: Swiss Architect (1914-2004) (1914-2004)
Alberto Kamenzinder (June 7, 1914, Lugano – September 29, 2004, Astano) was a Swiss architect from the canton of Ticino. He also became a professor at the prestigious Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (“Technical University of Zurich”).
earlier years
Alberto Camenzind is the son of hotelier Eduard Camenzind, married to Chiara d’Ambrogio, originally from Gersau in the canton of Schwyz (official German). He attended secondary school in Lugano. Between 1933 and 1939 he studied architecture with Prof. Wilhelm Dunkel at the Technical University of Zurich, among others, including Max Frisch and Justus Dahinden.
career
After finishing his studies, he worked in the studios of architects Otto Rudolf Salvisberg and William Dunkel. Returning to the south in 1942, he opened his own architectural studio in Lugano and collaborated with Bruno Brocchi from 1959 to 1991. His early work as an independent architect included houses in Cad Mario (1953) and Sorrengo (1957). Camenzind’s first public commission was a secondary school (today’s “media school”) in Bellinzona (1958), followed by the main building of RTSI (Swiss Italian Television/Radio) by Camenzind, in 1958 Completion and cooperation between 1961 and 1961 Augusto Jagley and Reno Tammy. He was also responsible for the headquarters of the Swiss Alfa Romeo importer (1963) in Agno, which was subsequently converted into a Migros supermarket) and Gmür House (1963) “la Casa Gmür”) in Brissago.
In 1964, when he was appointed “Expo 64” Lausanne Exhibition. As chief architect, he was responsible for designing the “multi-unit format” showroom for the event. Pay particular attention to the repeated “Swiss way” (“Weigde Switzerland”) theme is the feature of this “World Expo”.
In 1965 he was appointed professor at the Technical University of Zurich, and in 1981 he became an honorary professor.
In collaboration with structural engineer Pier Luigi Nervi and French architects Eugene BaudouinCamenzind was the chief architect of the “Bureau International du Travail”, which was built in Geneva between 1969 and 1975 for the International Labour Organization. At the time this huge building was the largest office building in Switzerland, measuring 200 meters long and 50 meters high.
Closer to home, one of his last major projects was Quartiere Maghetti (1984) in the capital of Ticines, which featured exposed concrete and dry stone wall finishes.
Honors and Committees
Alberto Kamenzinder In 1964 he was granted honorary citizenship of Lugano. He is a member of the Committee for the Conservation of the Swiss and Ticino Memorials (“Denkmalpflegekommission[en]”), from 1964 to 1968 he was President of the Swiss Federation of Central Architects and from 1965 to 1972 a member of the Swiss Federation of Central Architects. Federal Fine Arts Council (“Eidgenössischen Kunstkommission”).
retirement and death
He retired to Astano in 1997 and died here in 2004.
