Albert Jacob Welty (October 11, 1894 – December 5, 1965) was a Swiss writer and painter.
Life
Welti was born in Zürich-Höngg. The son of the famous painter Albert Welti, Albert Jakob Welti was also educated as an artist. He studied at art academies in Düsseldorf, Munich, London and Madrid. He lost both parents in his youth: first his mother died in Munich in 1911, then his father in 1912 in Bern. In the early 1920s, a severe typhus outbreak in the Balearic Islands brought a turning point from painting to writing.
After returning to Switzerland, he chose Chêne-Bougeries near Geneva as his place of work. In numerous essays and speeches, Welty took positions on the cultural, literary, and political issues of his time. All these works, large and small, show that he was an independent-minded critic. last work, Waters Pictures (1962) is a portrait of a sensitive artist who finally puts him on the same level as his father. In addition to other novels and plays, the author has written several stories and radio dramas in which dialect often has an opportunity.
Albert J. Welti received several honors and awards for single works by Schweizerische Schillerstiftung (1931, 1942 and 1948), and in 1954 for his complete theatrical work. From 1933 to 1965 he was a member of the board of directors of the Gesellschaft Schweizerischer Dramatiker and from 1946 to 1951 he was the chairman of the association.
Welty died in Amrisville. Welti’s literary remains are located in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern.
