👩🎤👗
Albert III the Pious of Bavaria-Munich (German: Albrecht III. der Fromme, Herzog von Bayern-München; 27 March 1401 – 29 February 1460), Duke of Bavaria-Munich from 1438. He was born in Wolfratshausen to Elisabeth Visconti, daughter of Duke Ernest of Bavaria and Bernabow Visconti.
Life
Albert was first engaged in 1429 to Elizabeth, the daughter of Eberhard III, Count of Württemberg, but she eloped and married John IV, Count of Wittenberg, who had been her father’s court attendant.
In 1432, Albert secretly married Agnes Bernauer, a maid from Augsburg, when he represented his father Ernest, Duke of Bavaria-Munich, as prefect in the former Duchy of Bavaria-Straubing . His father opposed the marriage. In 1435, while Agnes was living in Straubing, Duke Ernest ordered her murder. She was accused of witchcraft, thrown into the Danube, and drowned while Albert was out hunting. After the death of his first wife, Albert stayed in Ingolstadt with Louis VII, Duke of Bavaria-Ingolstadt, but reconciled with his father in November of the same year.
After reconciling with his father, Albert married Princess Anna of Brunswick-Grubenhagen-Einbeck as his second wife, with whom he had ten children.
In 1438, Albert succeeded his father as Duke of Bavaria-Munich. Around 1438-39, he built Blutenberg Castle as a hunting lodge between the arms of the Ulm River. The castle was later expanded by his third son Sigismund. In 1440, Albert rejected the offer of the Bohemian crown. In 1442 he expelled the Jews from all Upper Bavaria. Jews were not allowed to settle again until 250 years later. In 1444 and 1445 he launched two campaigns against the robber barons. After the extermination of the dukes of Bavaria-Ingolstadt, Albert released the duchy in 1447 to his father’s cousin, Henry XVI of Bavaria-Landshut.
In 1455 Albert founded a Benedictine monastery in Andechs. He died in Munich in 1460 and was buried in Anders.
