About Aksel V. Johannesen: Faroese politician (1972-)
Aksel Vilhelmsson Johannesen (born 8 November 1972 in Krakswijk) is a Faroese lawyer and Social Democrat (Javnaðarflokkurin) politician and a former football player. He was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands from 2015 to 2019.
Political career
Aksel Johannesen was the party’s first complement to Løgting (Faroe Islands Parliament) in the 2008 Faroese General Election, and he sometimes has a seat in Parliament, especially It’s Andrias Petersen. He became Minister of Health on 16 July 2009, when John Johannesson rejected the ministerial post following the ouster of Hans Pauly Strom. He resigned as Minister of Health on 21 February, was appointed Minister of Finance, and was elected Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin) on 5 March 2011. On April 6 of the same year, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. His main task as SPD chairman is to restore the party to its former strength in the upcoming Rogertin elections. On November 14, 2011, the cabinet changed and the Social Democrats were no longer part of the new cabinet. Aksel Johannesen then became chairman of the Løgting Social Democratic Party.
In the Faroese general election on 1 September 2015, Johannesen’s party won the election with 25.1% of the vote and became Prime Minister. Johannesson himself received 2,405 individual votes, a new record for the Faroe Islands. He broke Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen’s record from 2011, the 1967 individual vote.
football career
Aksel V. Johannesen plays football at his hometown club KÍ Klaksvík, mainly as a striker. While not always an automatic choice for the starting XI, he contributed as KÍ won the 1991 Faroe League and the 1994 National Cup (Johannesson in the eventual 2-1 win over B71 Sandur). Substitute appearances).
Aksel V. Johannesen is also a well-known runner, the 1994 National 100-meter champion. He also plays volleyball for the Klaksvík club Mjølnir.
personal life
He obtained his LLM from the University of Copenhagen in 2004 and worked as a lawyer in Tórshavn in 2007 until he became an active politician. He is the former chairman of the Klaksvík football club Klaksvíkar Ítróttarfelag, where he played in his youth.
Aksel V. Johannesen was the son of the former Faroese statesman Vilhelm Johannesen.
