About Akmaral Arystanbekova: Kazakh politician (1948-)
Akmalal Kedarkiz Aristanbekova (Born May 12, 1948; Kazakh: Ақмарал Хайдарқызы Арыстанбекова, Aqmaral Haıdarqyzy Arystanbekova) is a Kazakh diplomat. From November 1989 to December 1991, he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, and from 1992 to 1999, he was the first permanent representative (ambassador) of Kazakhstan to the United Nations. In 1992, she became the fourth female ambassador country among the 176 member states of the United Nations. Following her appointment with the United Nations, she also served as Ambassador of Kazakhstan to France (1999-2003) and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) (1999-2001). Arystanbekova has been at the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan since 1993. Arystanbekova also holds a PhD in World History and is fluent in English and French.

Ms. Arystanbekova was born on 12 May 1948 in Almaty to Khaidar Arystanbekov and Sharbanu Nurmuhamedova. She graduated summa cum laude from the Kazakh State University of Almaty with a BA in Chemistry in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in 1975. From 1975 to 1978, she continued to teach at the Kazakh State University.
From 1978 to 1983, he served as secretary of the Central Secretariat of the Kazakh Communist Youth League. From 1983 to 1984, he was the vice chairman of the presidium of the Kazakh Foreign Friendship and Cultural Association, and from 1984 to 1989, he was the chairman.
Ms. Arystanbekova was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Kazakhstan in November 1989 and served until December 1991. In December 1991, she was sent to New York to prepare for Kazakhstan’s admission to the United Nations on March 2, 1992. At the time she was a senior advisor at the Permanent Mission of the Soviet Union (later the Russian Federation). From April 1992 to October 1999, Ms. Aristanbekova served as the first Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations. From 1996-1999, she also served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to Cuba (non-resident). From 1994-1995, she served as Vice-President of the 49th United Nations General Assembly. Her other UN positions include: Vice-President of the Executive Board of UNICEF in 1998 and Vice-President of the First Committee of the 53rd Session of the UN General Assembly in 1998. She completed her assignment as Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations. In October 1999, Kofi Annan became Secretary-General. Following her UN assignment, she was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to France and Permanent Representative to UNESCO from 1999-2003 (1999-2001). Since 2003, she has served as Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Kazakhstan.
She has published six monographs and several academic papers on international relations and world politics in domestic and international publications, and lectures at the University as a professor of international studies.
She was awarded the Supreme Council of the Moscow Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1970 and 1981, and was awarded the Order of Kurmat in 1996.
