Akiko Yano (Yano Takako, Akiko Yanoborn Akiko Suzuki (Suzuki Takako Akiko Suzuki); February 13, 1955) is a Japanese pop and jazz musician and singer, born in Tokyo, raised in Aomori, and later began her singing career in the mid-1970s. Her vocals and singing style have been compared to British singer Kate Bush.
She has worked with the Yellow Magic Orchestra and its members Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, as well as with members of Swing Out Sister, Pat Metheny, The Chieftains, Lyle Mays, Little Feat, David Sylvian, Mick Karn, Kenji Omura, Gil Goldstein, Toninho Horta, Mino Cinelu, Jeff Bova, Charlie Haden, Peter Erskine, Anthony Jackson, David Rhodes, Bill Frisell, Thomas Dolby, the band Quruli, Rei Harakami as Yanokami and her daughter Miu Sakamoto.

Akiko Yano was born in Tokyo and grew up in Aomori, Japan. She started playing the piano at the age of three and showed promising talent. At the age of fifteen, Yano moved to Tokyo alone and entered Aoyama Gakuin High School, where she started her music career. She later started performing in jazz clubs and her piano skills made her popular among other musicians. Yano joins a band rooted in Tin Pan Lane.
Her maternal great-grandfather, of Russian descent, was involved in medical activities during the 1896 Sanriku Earthquake and the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake

Yano recorded her debut album, japanese girl, mostly in Los Angeles with Lowell George and Little Feat. She started working with Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). They went on to play her next recording project and invited Yano to join them on two world tours. Yano expanded his musical collaboration with YMO in subsequent CD releases.One of the collaborations, her fourth studio album Gohan Gadkitaeyo (1980), one of the first CDs released in 1982. Yano went on to release CDs featuring JAPAN and Pat Metheny, and performed on albums by Thomas Dolby and other artists. In 1990 Yano moved to New York, where she collaborated and toured with some of the world’s most famous musicians, including Chief, Tonino Horta and Jeff Bova, for his project THE HAMMONDS.
Yano’s work goes beyond her album projects.She was featured by Japanese animation film company Studio Ghibli, which featured works such as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Yano composed music for the film my neighbor yamada and created and performed sound effects for two short films using only her voice Suzu and Shuiyunmengmen Animation director Hayao Miyazaki. Both films were shown at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo.As recently as 2008, Yano was in Goldfish on the cliff by the sea As Ponyo’s sister. To date, Yano has released 27 original albums, 3 of which are released by Nonesuch Records: Akiko Yanoselected compilation by Robert Hurwitz and John Zorn (1990), love your life (1993) and Piano Evening News (1996). In October 2008, the 27th original album was released Akiko released. The album was produced by Grammy-winning producer T Bone Burnett and recorded in Los Angeles. personal life
Yano divorced Makoto Yano, the producer of her first album, shortly after her marriage. She later married musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, with whom she had a daughter, Miu Sakamoto. Yano separated from him in 1992 and divorced in August 2006. Yano is a Christian.
