About Aimery Picaud: French priest
Aymeric Pico A 12th century French scholar, monk and pilgrim from Parthenay-le-Vieux in Poitou. Today, he is best known as the suspected author of Codex Calixtinus, an illuminated manuscript that provided background information for pilgrims traveling along the Way of St. James. Essentially, he wrote one of the earliest known travel guides.
Aymeric’s Basque Materials
Among Basque scholars, Amyeric’s account of his journey to Santiago de Compostela (circa 1140) is considered very important, as it contains some of the earliest Basque words and phrases from the post-Roman period.
The words and phrases he recorded were:
- Andrea ‘Lady (of the house)’ (modern Andrea)
- Andrea Mariaknown as the “Mother of God”
- araji “meat” (modern log)
- Summons “fish” (modern arrest)
- Ardum ‘wine’, assumed to represent nasalization [aɾdũ] (modern Addofrom old Ardano)
- okona “Dart” (modern Azcona)
- Bellatra “Priest” (modern beretra ‘Holy Artifact’)
- echea “house” (modern Exia)
- rape “Going to Church” (modern Elisala)
- Elegia “King” (modern Eregia)
- Gary “Wheat” (modern Gary)
- Jonah “Master” (modern Jonah)
- Domney Acqui “St James” (modern Jauna Done Iakue)
- Baba “bread” (modern Ogi)
- Urciacalled “God” by Pico (see Urzi)
- uric acid “any water” (modern Uric)
