Mawang Incident
In 2002, Bregman claimed that Ashraf Marwan, the son-in-law of Egyptian President Jamal Abdul Nasser, was a Mossad spy. According to Bregman, Marwan volunteered to join the Mossad in 1970, but then misled the Israelis ahead of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Although Marwan insisted that Bregman’s account was “a stupid detective story,” the two became friends, and Marwan made Bregman a consultant for his memoir. On June 27, 2007, the day Bregman and Marwan met in central London, Marwan’s body was found in a small rose garden under the balcony of his London apartment. A police investigation could not determine whether Marwan was pushed or jumped. In 2016, Bregman published a book titled spy who fell to earth, about his relationship with Mawang. In December 2017, Salon Pictures purchased the rights to make it into a feature documentary. The “Bregman Collection”, which includes documents and tapes related to the Marwan affair, is kept in the Liddellhart Archives at King’s College London.
