👧👓⚡
Have you ever seen your favorite musician sing so perfectly and thought they were lucky enough to have such a wonderful voice? You might think singing is a natural phenomenon, singers and music artists just have incredible voices and the fame their voices bring them. However, singing is more difficult than you might think.
Singing too much, or singing beyond a healthy range, has caused many singers’ voices to hurt, causing them to lose their voices forever. Vocal cord damage mostly occurs in singers who have entered the singing industry purely by talent and have never formally learned to sing, which can train them to vocalize within a healthy range of vocal cords. However, there is no 100% guarantee that a trained singer will avoid vocal problems. Many well-trained music stars also face vocal problems, mostly due to over-singing without resting their vocal cords.
Over the past few years, there have been many famous singers who have had severe vocal problems and have almost lost their voices. Most of these vocal cord injuries are caused by the singer’s vocal style, including melisma, beling, and overuse of excess on one voice. Some of these singers managed to avoid serious problems due to prompt treatment, while others lost their singing and careers.
You may have noticed that Adele, Sam Smith and Elton John are perpetually silent, but the list goes way beyond that. Here, we’ve put together a list of 15 famous singers who have lost their voices forever (2022 list).

Miley Cyrus underwent vocal cord surgery in late 2019 after being hospitalized and having tonsillitis detected. The sound problem is partly due to overuse of the sound and partly due to Cyrus’ smoking habits. Cyrus’ vocal cord surgery was followed by weeks of silence, and many of her plans to record songs were put on hold.
While Miley Cyrus was in hospital, doctors discovered that the singer had unknowingly suffered from Reinke’s edema for several years, which could only be treated with vocal cord surgery and a few weeks of rest. Vocal cords are sensitive parts of the human body, and an error in vocal cord surgery can mean losing your voice forever. Luckily, Miley Cyrus underwent successful vocal cord surgery that changed her voice slightly, but it didn’t affect her singing career.
2. Adele
Adele suffered from vocal cord bleeding back in 2011 and underwent vocal cord microsurgery. She had to take her singing off for a few months while recovering from surgery. Still, having to cancel due to vocal issues, she was able to resume her busy concert schedule, all thanks to the surgery on her vocal cords by Dr. Steven Zeitels.
Vocal cord hemorrhage is a sensitive voice problem primarily caused by hemorrhage in the lamina propria, a thin layer of tissue made up of loosely arranged fibers that provides the vocal cords with the flexibility they need to vibrate as they speak. Adele’s vocal cord microsurgery is designed to remove a small tumor in the vocal cords to prevent bleeding.
Again, in July 2017, Adele left a heartfelt message on Twitter announcing that her vocal cords had been damaged again, preventing her from being on stage at the concert. She had thought about lip-syncing her songs on stage, but abandoned the idea, saying, “I can’t do that to you in a million years.”
In January 2020, the singer said she would be writing music again in 2020 after a five-year hiatus since 2017, but may never tour or perform on stage again. Her vocal cord injury also kept her out of the spotlight entirely.
3. Sam Smith
Sam Smith rose to fame in 2012 after starring in Latch, but the melodic singer had to suffer from vocal cord problems in 2015, at the start of his career. Sam Smith underwent a medical procedure to treat unstable blood vessels in his vocal cords, a delicate procedure that can cause serious problems if it goes wrong. The blood vessels in the vocal cords are very sensitive, and if not handled carefully, a person can lose their voice forever.
Sam Smith had to go through such delicate times at the beginning of his career, but luckily his surgery was a success because his soulful voice was destined to touch more hearts. Sam Smith operates under Dr. Steven Zettles, who treated Adele’s damaged umbilical cord and preserved her voice for her thousands of followers.
In 2019, problems with Sam Smith’s vocal cords forced the cancellation of many scheduled singing events. It was a determined time in his life as he hysterically started worrying about his voice. While he’s stable now, with a bunch of songs out in 2020; Dancing with Stranger, Temptation, I’m not the only one, to name a few.

Julie Andrews has blamed her surgeon for her condition as she lost her singing forever and her speaking voice was badly damaged after a catastrophic operation. Doctors initially reassured Julie Andrews that the condition was temporary and her voice would return to normal within a few weeks, however, she continued to face issues for 2 years and eventually contacted her lawyer to file a lawsuit against the surgeon .
Julie Andrews has had four surgeries to get her speaking voice back to normal, but her singing is still a mess.

After trying natural remedies for four years, Bjork finally underwent laser surgery in 2012, followed by three weeks of silence to rest his vocal cords. She later told fans in social media posts that her vocal cords were as good after surgery as they were before the nodules.
Bjork’s successful vocal cord surgery was truly a blessing, as she was able to sing all the notes clearly, and she admits the surgery was a shock to her.
6. Mariah Carey
In October 2014, Mariah Carey had to deal with a media backlash after her poor performance on the Chanteuse tour in Tokyo. Her voice was altered by a popping vocal cord, causing her poor performance.
Unlike other singers, Mariah Carey has shaped her extraordinary singing career from an early age for vocal cord deductions. The opera singer even credits her vocal chords for allowing her to hit whistled notes. While she’s been treating the nodules with natural remedies and techniques, her vocal cords can’t stand her long singing routine, which is why her vocals are different from those of the 1990s, her prime career.

His first round of vocal cord surgery to remove the polyp was accidentally performed, leaving John Mayer more painful than ever. However, John Mayer’s second round of vocal cord therapy was successful, but less conventional and much more painful. John Mayer had Botox injected into his throat to paralyze his vocal cords, giving them time to fully recover. Botox treatment is like magic, and John Mayer returned to the stage in 2013 to sing and perform.
