About Alaaeldin Abouelkassem: Egyptian Fencer (1990-)
Allah Erdine Mohammad Saeed Abu El Qasem (Arab: علاء الدين محمد السيد أبو القاسم; born 25 November 1990) is an Egyptian fencer who won a silver medal in the men’s foil event at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He started fencing at the age of 8 and started fencing internationally in 2008, winning medals at the African and World Junior Championships and the Junior World Cup, before advancing to the senior level in 2011 with a bronze medal at Fleuret de St. Petersburg. Later that year, he won gold medals in the individual and team foil events at the 2011 Pan-Arab Games and then entered the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he won Africa’s first-ever Olympic fencing medal.
early life
Abouelkassem was born on November 25, 1990 in Setif, Algeria, to an Egyptian father and an Algerian mother, and moved to Egypt when he was four years old. He grew up in Alexandria and started swimming and karate before starting fencing training at the city’s Al-Selah Al-Sakandry club at the age of 8. After success in the sport at a young age, he was forced to give up after entering the Arab Academy of Technology and Maritime Transport, as the program was too demanding for him to study engineering and fencing. He was quickly rediscovered by his former coach, Mohamed Saeed, who nominated him for the national team.
Profession
Abouelkassem’s international career began in 2008 when he won gold in foil at the African Junior Championships, bronze at the World Junior Fencing Championships in Italy, and third place at the Junior Fencing World Cup. He finished third at the 2009 Junior Fencing World Cup, and a year later won the gold medal at the 2010 World Junior Fencing Championships. He won his first World Cup bronze medal as a senior at the 2011 Fleuret de St-Petersbourg and a gold medal in the individual and team foil events at the 2011 Pan Arab Games.
Abouelkassem qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics and defeated American Miles Chamley-Watson 15-10 in the round of 32 in the individual foil event. He matched Germany’s Peter Jopic and Italy’s Andrea Kasala in the round of 16 and quarter-finals, respectively, before beating South Korea’s Choi Byung-chul 15-12 in the semifinals. Abouelkassem lost 13-15 to China’s Thunder in the gold match, but his silver medal was the first Olympic fencing medal for a player representing an African country. He also played in the team foil competition, where the Egyptian was eliminated by the British 45-33 in the first round.
At the 2013 Mediterranean Games, Abouelkassem won a bronze medal in the individual foil competition. As of 2013, he is coached by Paul Kantorski of Poland. At the 2015 African Games, he won gold medals in the men’s individual and team foil events.
