Also, Veshen’s wife grew up in Orthodox and Lutheran churches, so the couple decided to raise their children without teaching them an organized religion.

Profession
the first few years
Vishen started an internship at Microsoft in 1999 after graduating from the University of Michigan and left after 11 weeks. He then moved to the city and joined AIESEC, a global student exchange organization in New York, to earn a salary even below the poverty line. After seven years in the US, Vishen aspired to be an entrepreneur and decided to move again, this time in Silicon Valley, only to lose everything. A failed attempt to become an entrepreneur bankrupted Lakhiani and forced him to work at a minimum wage.
Spiritual Entrepreneur
In 2003, the entrepreneur with just $700 started his business “Mindvalley” in New York City’s Times Square. He started out with the company as a small website to teach meditation, and then gradually started selling meditation CDs. A year later, Lakhani started devoting his time and energy to Mindvalley and quit his sales job. Over time, Mindvalley became a self-owned media company that built websites for authors. In 2010, seven years after founding Mindvalley, Lakhiani made a comeback with the launch of A-Fest, an annual global transformation festival held in five-star locations around the world.
The entrepreneur further expanded his business, launching a popular health transformation program called “Wildfit” in August 2016. Two months later, Vishen came up with Mindvalley Quests, his industry-leading learning platform, and in 2013 launched Mindvalley’s new vertical, Mindvalley Academy, after integrating all the sites Mindvalley has built for authors. He then merged A-Fest with Mindvalley, and by July 2017 Vishen had opened the Mindvalley University City campus in Barcelona, Spain.
author
In May 2016, Vishen debuted as a New York Times bestseller with his first self-help book, The Code of Extraordinary Minds. With his first book, Vishen surpassed authors such as JK Rowling and Stephen King, and twice became the world’s second-most author on Amazon’s Kindle. The book has been translated into over 25 languages and has been an Amazon bestseller five times. Vishen’s debut feature has also been featured on several magazine covers in Malaysia, in addition, it has won several awards. Four years later, in June 2020, Lakhiani published his second book of its kind, Buddha and the Bad Guy: The Secret Spiritual Art of Successful Work, at Penguin Random House. The book went on to No. 1 on the Wall Street Journal’s Business Hardcover List and No. 9 on the New York Times Guide’s list. In his Instagram post, Vishen announced his upcoming books, including “Superman at Work” in 2021, and “6 Phase Meditation” and “Unfuckwithable” in 2022.
struggle
Around 2010, Vishen Lakhiani invested $2 million in a tech startup that failed two years later. It was a period of failure for the budding entrepreneur, as most of his several businesses did not survive. After the 9/11 attacks in the U.S., Wishin and his business were made more difficult to survive because he belonged to a Muslim country. Vishen revealed in an interview that US immigration authorities did not extend his visa, which forced him and his then-wife Christina to leave the country and settle in Malaysia. It also meant that Lakhiani’s start-up, Mindvalley, needed to be established in his home country, so Lakhiani and his then business partner moved the Mindvalley headquarters to Kuala Lumpur. Since then, Vishen has traveled between the US and Malaysia every six weeks for the next 20 years. Vishen faced another setback in 2015, when he completed profits to former Mindvalley partners under a deal struck three years earlier. Even after Vishen made all the profits, the company was in the red until 2016.
dispute
On January 24, 2018, the spiritual entrepreneur sparked controversy by posting a video claiming that Nestlé’s product “Milo” contains 40% sugar. The video angered Nestlé, and the company soon issued a clarifying statement, saying Vishen’s video was misleading. Weishen; however, expressed dissatisfaction with Nestlé’s vague clarification and posted another video explaining the ingredients of several Nestlé products. The company then responded again with a statement by nutritionist Nurul Iliani Ahmad defending Milo. As of 2021, Vishen’s videos have received over 90,000 views.
