club career
Sampdoria
Born in Genoa in the Liguria region, Massi started his career at Serie A club UC Sampdoria. During the 2008-09 season, he was part of the U17 youth team. That season, he was booked six times in the league and three times in the playoffs.
Massi only played one season with Sampdoria’s U20 team, although he was eligible to play 3 seasons, from the age of 18 to 20 (2009 to 2012). He also spent the 2009-10 season on loan at Lavanese in Serie A (also in the province of Genoa) before returning to the port city. In the 2010-11 season, Massey played 15 of 26 games in the 20-team league for Samp, missing one game due to suspension after being booked five times that season. Sampdoria finished 8th in Group A that season and slipped from 1st in Group A last season (losing the semi-finals in the playoffs).
Pro Vercelli
On 8 July 2011, Massi and teammate Tommaso Cancelotti left Sampdoria again to join FC Pro Vercelli. Sampdoria gave the Piedmont club half of the registration rights for 500 euros each in exchange for the opportunity to develop players.
As the 2011-12 League Pro Prima Divisione playoff champion, Massi became one of the protagonists of the club’s promotion. However, Massey himself was suspended twice, both for being sent off (one straight off, one with a double warning). He was also booked 4 times, including the 2 mentioned above. Moreover, Massey also received a yellow card in the playoffs.
At the end of the season, the two clubs failed to agree on a price for Massi by the deadline, so both clubs submitted a sealed envelope offer to Serie B to buy a stake from the other. On June 23, 2012, Serie B announced that Pro Vercelli had acquired Massi directly from Sampdoria at a higher price of €421,000.
Juventus
After winning the bid for the young defender, Pro Vercelli decided to sell Massi immediately. On July 5, 2012, Massi signed another four-year co-ownership agreement with Serie A and Piedmontese club Juventus. On 22 August 2012, Juventus bought the player outright, buying the remainder of him from Pro Vercelli by selling Elio de Silvestega’s co-ownership and an undisclosed cash amount half of the registration rights. Juventus later revealed in its annual financial report that Massi had cost the club €2m and 50% of De Sylvester’s contract worth €800,000; thus, the fee involved €1.2m in cash.
On 31 August 2012, Massi returned to Pro Vercelli from Juventus on a temporary loan agreement with Gabriel Appelte Pires. After spending 14 league games in the Serie B starting XI in the first half of the 2012-13 season, Massi was unexpectedly recalled to Turin for a re-positioning during the January 2013 transfer window. On June 30, 2013, he was loaned to Serie B team Ternana Calcio with an option to buy.
Ternana
On July 9, 2013, Juventus announced the sale of Alberto Massi to Ternana in a co-ownership deal of €2 million. (€1.35 million plus half of Simone Rousseini’s registration rights) Therefore, Massi’s registration rights will remain with the Umbrian club for the 2013-14 Serie B season. In June 2014, Masi and Russini’s co-ownership deal was updated.
On 2 February 2015, Turnana signed Massi outright for 1.5 million euros, part of Juventus’ deal to sign Alberto Brignoli from Turnana for 1.75 million euros that day. Russini also returned to Ternana in June 2015 for €150,000, matching the €1.5 million price tag for Masi’s 50% registration rights.
Barry
On July 11, 2017, Massey signed a one-year contract with Barry. However, on August 31, he signed a provisional contract with Serie B club Spezia, with the option to buy players’ contracts.
Back to Pro Vercelli
On August 23, 2019, he signed with Pro Vercelli.
International career
On 15 August 2012, he made his debut for the Italian U-21 team in a friendly match against the Netherlands.
