Kobayashi hits again
Four years after the huge pole lap of 2017, Kobayashi Kamui is once again a star Qualified for Toyota.
The former F1 driver posted a time of 3m: 23.900 seconds on his first lap of the 8.47-mile Sarthe circuit.
The final 30-minute session took place in twilight conditions on Thursday night, and the other Hyperclass entries couldn’t compare to Kobayashi.
This is the fourth time in the past five years that the No. 7 crew of Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Jose Maria Lopez has achieved pole position.
However, they have yet to win the race, won last year by the No. 8 Toyota team of Sebastian Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Brendon Hartley.
Hartley was the No. 8 driver in qualifying and finished second in the Toyota front stop.
Kobayashi’s lap time (below) was nearly 8 seconds slower than his 2020 effort.
The slower times are due to new Hypercar regulations that have moved the event away from the LMP1 prototype machinery.
After Audi and Porsche pulled out of the LMP1 in recent years, the FIA hopes the supercar rules will attract new manufacturers.
The closest car to the Toyota was Nicolas Lapierre at the entrance to the Alps, about 1.6 seconds slower.
Da Costa leads LMP2 charge
2019-20 Formula E champion Antonio Felix da Costa took pole position in the LMP2 class in his Oreca.
The Portuguese was four seconds behind the Hypercar Toyota.
Dries Vanthoor (GTE Pro) and Julien Andlauer (GTE Am) separate the two GTE class pole positions.
Which former F1 drivers are involved?
A total of 16 former F1 drivers participated in the entry list, divided into Hypercar, LMP2 and GTE categories.
Pole driver Kobayashi left in late 2014 for Toyota, Sauber and Caterham.
The entire #8 Toyota team is made up of former F1 drivers and Hartley is the latest.
In 2018, he played a full season for Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri).
Multiple Grand Prix and double Indy 500 champion Juan Pablo Montoya drives the DragonSpeed-Oreca #21 machine.
Sky Sports F1 specialists Paul di Resta and Anthony Davidson joined United Autosports and Jota respectively.
Kevin Magnussen was released from Haas at the end of 2020 and is racing High Class Racing with his father Jan.

Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi were Manor’s teammates in the 2015 season, racing Panis Racing and G-Drive respectively.
Former Sauber driver Felipe Nasr will join Oliver Jarvis and Ryan Cullen at Oreca, run by Risi Competizione.
Stoffel Vandoorne, who retired from F1 at the end of 2018, is racing for the Jota team, which also runs Davidson.
The Belgian will finish 28th, while Davidson will finish 38th.
Dutchman Giedo van der Garde and 2008 Canadian Grand Prix winner Robert Kubica will compete in the LMP2 mechanical race.
The team was completed by Gianmaria Bruni in the GTE-Pro Porsche and two-time GP champion Giancarlo Fisichella in the GTE-AM Ferrari.
Le Mans 2021 start time
At the time of writing, 61 entrants are planned for the competition.
This comes after an LMP2 car had to pull out after a lot of practice on Thursday.
After a slight advance in 2020, the race is back to its traditional 4pm local time start time.
It was 3pm UK Saturday, 10am EST.
Traditionally, the car will be started by the wave of the French tricolor flag at the rolling start.
What is the weather forecast?
Current forecasts predict that there could be a drizzle at the start of the game, which won’t disappear until the evening.
It is expected to be cloudy throughout the night, with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees Celsius for the entire 24 hours.

The best place to watch the race is Eurosport, which will have full coverage on the track.
Watching this way requires a subscription, as it is through the official World Endurance Championship app.
Alternatively, Le Mans Radio will again broadcast throughout the race, as it has done for over 30 years.
