the first five characters in the coen brothers films

Since 1984, Joel and Ethan Cohen have made their mark in making iconic films. Known for their unique style, storytelling and dialogue, the duo has managed to please audiences around the world, in part because of their ability to create interesting characters. This article reviews some of the best characters from Joel and Ethan’s featured playlist. This list will only record films with brothers as writers/directors, so works like Gambit, Bridge of Spiesand uninterrupted are exempt because they were only written by the two brothers.
Maggie Gunderson
Relaxed mind and soul fargo. Marge is a simple character, but what makes her charming is her colorful dialogue and her approachable personality. It really helps that Marge is in a world full of fascinating villains. She is a dedicated police officer with good morals but not afraid to deal with evil. Marge is a great example of how to craft a strong three-dimensional protagonist without the need for a complicated backstory or political agenda. Of course, Frances McDormand is a big part of what makes Marge so strong, and her confrontation with Jerry Lundegaard showcased what McDormand and William H. Macy can do.
Jerry Lundgard
Jerry is an interesting combination, a “luck” type character who is compassionate, selfish and cowardly. His reasons for trying to make money from his stepfather are logical, but pathetic moves anyway. One of the more interesting parts is that he defrauded GMAC of a $320,000 loan. Jerry is another type of villain. He’s not a majestic threat or a murderous beast like Peter Stormare’s Gaear Grimsrud, but he’s also not a smart character like Marge. However, that’s what fascinates him, his antics in the film help create a riveting moral dilemma, and the Coen brothers do a great job of writing. William H. Macy’s threat to shoot the Coen family dog for the role is a good thing (joking, of course), because it’s hard to imagine any other actor doing his part so well. However, Martin Freeman fargo series.
Anton Chigurh
Incredibly, Javier Bardem almost missed the role due to scheduling conflicts, as it was nearly impossible to see anyone else playing Anton Chigurh the way he did. Usually, the Coen brothers use some kind of quirk to shape their villains. Chigurh, however, is a straightforward monster with a twisted ideology. He’s ruthless, but doesn’t kill for no reason. He believes that fate is the one who chooses the life of a man or a woman, thus absolving him of the murder of innocent souls. That’s why his scene with Carla Jean Moss is so great. She is challenging his morals and he is forced to question his true type of man. He’s easily the scariest villain in a Coen Brothers film, and the lack of a backstory about the psychopath makes him even more compelling.
Marty Ross
Hailee Steinfeld stepped out of the gate strong by portraying a strong, wayward girl in search of revenge. This update to the John Wayne Classic showcases the range of newcomers at the time, and she passed with flying colors. Rose’s goal was simple: she was going to murder Tom Chaney, the man who murdered her father. She doesn’t have a complicated backstory, and the Coen brothers are wise not to try to overcomplicate her story to justify her actions. Is it right that she gets the law by murdering another person? No, but we as viewers understand the motivation and sympathize with the young hero. Mattie Ross is a great example of how keeping things simple when it comes to characterization can make it more memorable.
Jeff “Dude” Lebowski
One of the eccentric characters of the Coen brothers. The crazy thing about “The Dude” is that he’s a very passive character. He doesn’t really have any strong goals to achieve. He’s a slob and is always dragged into bad situations that force him to react. There’s nothing particularly striking about him. Damn, his past is almost a mystery. So, what makes Lebowski one of the better characters in the Coen Brothers catalog? Quite simply, he’s just an interesting character. Thanks to his unique dialogue and Jeff Daniels’ determined performance, the Coen brothers once again elevate the bad lead in the hands of another. This guy is the kind of guy you’d drink beer, so it’s hard not to relate to this iconic character.
