Aki-Petteri Arvid Berg ([หbรฆrj]; born 28 July 1977) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey defender. He was selected third overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1995 NHL draft. He played for the Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs for nine seasons and represented Finland twice at the Winter Olympics, winning a bronze medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and a silver medal at the 2004 Ice Hockey World Cup, where Finland hosted Canada in the final, and won a bronze medal at the 2006 Hockey World Cup. Profession
Berg started his career at the age of 16 in the 1993-1994 season, playing 6 games for TPS at SM-liiga in Finland, contributing 3 assists and a +4 rating. Berg was at the time the youngest player to compete at SM-liiga (since surpassed by Jesse Joensuu, who made his debut at 15). Berg also played 12 games for Kiekko-67 in the Finnish First Division this season, scoring 1 goal, 1 assist, 16 minutes from the penalty spot and -8 points. He also represented Finland in the European Youth Championship, scoring 6 points from 5 matches. The following season, Berg played for TPS’ B and A youth teams and also played five games for the men’s team. He also played 20 more games for Kiekko-67, scoring 12 points. Berg was again on the European Youth Championship squad, with 1 assist in 5 matches.
Berg was noticed by NHL scouts for his tall frame, heavy shooting, physicality and good mobility. He was selected by the Los Angeles Kings with the third overall pick, behind only defensemen Brian Bellard and Wade Laydon. Berg, a much-touted rookie, was described in Hockey News’ draft comments by Kings then-general manager Sam McMaster as “hitting like Scott Stevens, like Paul Coffey. skate”. The next season, the 18-year-old Berg moved to the NHL.
Berg played most of his first NHL season with the Kings, but was sent to the team’s IHL-affiliated Phoenix Road Runners for 20 games. In 51 games for the Kings, Berg didn’t score, contributed 7 assists and played 29 minutes with a -13 rating. In 20 games for the Roadrunners, Berg has no goals, three assists, 18 free throws and a -10 rating. Berg also played two playoff games for the Roadrunners, scoreless.
In his second NHL season, Berg once again struggled to stay on the Kings roster. Still, he improved his game, scoring his first two goals. He played 41 games for the Kings, scoring 2 goals and dishing out 6 assists while scoring 24 minutes from the free throw line and a -9 rating. In 23 games for the Roadrunners, Berg scored 1 goal, contributed 3 assists, played 21 minutes, and scored a -9. During the season, Berg also participated in the World Youth Championship on behalf of Finland, with 2 assists in 8 games.
Berg finally became an NHL regular in 1997-98, playing 72 games for the Kings with no goals, 8 assists, 61 PIMs and a +3 rating. Despite high hopes for his offensive potential, Berg played the role of a defensive back. The Kings made the playoffs, which allowed Berg to improve his game. The team’s playoff performance was short, losing to the St. Louis Blues in the first round of four games. In those four games, Berg has no goals, three assists, no penalties and a +3 rating. Berg also represented Finland at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, where he was a key defensive player for Finland’s bronze medal team.
The next season, Berg returned to his hometown team, TPS, and played 48 games. He scored 8 goals, provided 7 assists, played 137 minutes, and has a +5 rating. The team won the Finnish title with Berg, but Berg was suspended for another game because of dirty balls, which prevented him from playing the decisive game. Berg was a member of the Finnish national team and participated in the World Championships, playing 12 games without a point.
Berg returned to the NHL the following season, and it turned out to be his best yet. In 70 games, he scored 3 goals, provided 13 assists, played 45 minutes and scored -1. The Kings made the playoffs again, and Berg played only 2 games without scoring. He was once again a member of the Finnish World Championships team.
The 2000-01 season was another rough year for Berg. After scoring just four points in 47 games with the Kings, he was traded to Toronto on March 13, 2001 for Adam Meier and a second-round pick (later used to select Mike Kama). In his first full season in Toronto, Berg saw more hockey time and was a solid fifth or sixth guard. The team also had playoff success, reaching the conference finals, where they were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes in six games. In 20 playoff games, Berg had one assist.
After retiring from the NHL for family reasons, Berg played three more seasons in Toronto. During the 2004-2005 NHL lockout, Berg played for Timro in Sweden’s elite league. He’s the team’s best all-around guard with 20 points in 46 games and a +11 rating. After retiring from the NHL, Berg signed with his hometown club TPS. Berg served as captain and top defensive player for three seasons, but has been plagued by injuries the past two seasons. After only 10 games in 2010-2011, he announced his retirement from professional hockey on his birthday, July 28, 2011. Berg finished his NHL career with 606 regular-season games, 15 goals and 70 assists, an 85 +/- rating of -7 and 374 penalty points. In 54 career playoff games, he has 1 goal, 7 assists, 8 points, +2 rating and 47 free throw minutes.

In 2015, Berg served as equipment manager for TPS and the Finnish team. He is married to Virve. The couple have two children, Niclas and Nella.
